To uphold the TOS or to control the content and character of the site?

Hilly-

Trust me on this one. DW can be sarcastic and, occasionally willfully obscure, but he's maybe the least disingenuous and least passive-aggressive member of the board, right up there with HG.

When he says something, he means it, and it always comes after contemplation and reflection (unless he's possessed of the most astonishingly extemporaneous wit I've ever seen).
Seconded.

I agree regarding the walk-outs, unless people get to a point where they can not control how much time they are spending here.

Perhaps now would be a good time for someone to set the record straight as to what are the definitions of ownership, administration, moderation and membership.

OCD and the internet fit each other like hand and glove; I hadn't considered those for whom participation at LPSG can become an obsessive and all-consuming vector in their lives. There's also a condition commonly referred to as "sexual addiction*" and those who feel they meet the criteria for that would be well-advised to avoid this place as well.

*"Sex addiction" is mislabeled in my opinion: my trouble with the expression comes from the word "addiction", which, along with "fetish" and "fascist" is so overused and used so incorrectly as to make them practically meaningless. An addiction is a physical dependency on a substance: "compulsion" is a much better word choice, IMHO. Compulsions are involuntary (at least eventually) obsessions, which is not the same thing as the physical dependency an addict feels for Heroin, for instance.

* * * * *

As to definitions, I think that these probably work:

Owner: The person who invested money into the site through a purchasing agreement; he is legally liable for its contents and financially responsible for its maintenance. Depending on his level of trust (and/or experience) of the admins, he may or may not formulate the ToS and have final say in how they are enforced. Some are more hands-on, others more laisser-faire, but all responsibility ultimately falls on his shoulders.

Administrator: Follows the directives of the owner and manages the moderators; these positions are generally paid-positions, though not always. Final decisions regarding membership privileges and responsibilities and the extent to which they have been compromised by an individual member or mod may or may not be left up to them, depending on the owner. Presumably, they formulate the ToS with or without the owner's input.

Moderator: A volunteer who polices the website and is answerable to the admins and (presumably) the owner. It's my understanding that the mods, admins and owner have a special forum to discuss issues regarding individual posts and members in relation to the ToS and content issues. I have never been a mod here, so I cannot verify the extent of dialog that takes place there nor to what degree an individual mod can effect the outcome of any decision made by the admins and/or owner; it's also my understanding that some issues are voted upon, though, again, I have no idea what constitutes a majority vote nor to what degree such a majority vote would have on any decisions eventually determined by either the admins, owner or both.

All three of the positions mentioned above have the power to alter or delete posts deemed offensive or disallowed under the ToS.

Member: LPSG offers two kinds of memberships right now. Standard membership entitles anyone who falls within the eligibility criteria free access to the fora and chat; it also allows these members to post photos of him/herself in galleries found on their homepages. Gold membership is a paid-for status which allows full access not just to the privileges listed above but to all galleries as well; Standard members with fewer than 1000 posts only see blurry images in the galleries; once 1000 posts have been made, the Standard member then is awarded Gold status. IMO awarding Gold membership for reaching 1000 posts encourages post-whoring, but that's another discussion for another day.

Let's not tempt fate eh? I mean, I am off again soon. Let's hope it's me who decides when .

The Ignore feature works brilliantly, sir.

They tend to go hand-in-hand?

Ok, as long as the control element doesn't supersede the ToS.

If you don't like the site, you can always fuck off. Actually...I don't think you can

Your first comment is generally correct. Your second highlights a growing ignorance regarding long term members. Long term and high contributing members have generally shown commitment to care about the site, rather than just liking it amongst the ephemera of the internet. The exclusion of such people is correctly of concern to other like minded members.

But every member and guest here is responsible for everyone's experience here. There rules are there to regulate that experience so things can be fun.

I don't disagree with your general view, Invisi, but the problem is that the nature of the site will attract a very broad church. Not everyone is going to like each other and not everyone is going to have the same idea of fun.

This is my fear. Namely that we are seeing (again) a narrowing of the site's tolerance, both in terms of expression and enforcement, an homogenization of free expression, if you will.

Jokes aside, if you become too draconian, you risk a reduction in the variety and bite of the content.

As a moneymaker, it doesn't fit any model I am aware of. As a community, it's got its up and downs, but usually it's quite dysfunctional.

That's why I included before the attitude of the owner. As Bbucko mentioned, there are a myriad of attitudes to ownership in any sphere. I am currently working with some people on a project and their attitudes are quite illuminating.

You have your finger on it Vince. The community issue. IMO, the enforcement of the TOS is in danger of changing the "community", or at least the Fora community. If that is ultimately detrimental, and on which levels, then it should be being discussed.

I thought I'd be able to see bigger versions of the gallery thumbnails when I hit the 1000 post mark but still can't. Does anyone have any idea why? I've been looking forward to it since about post 700!

I believe you should ask Aconitum or/and Pecker that. My idea is -send them a PM.
I think you become a gold member when hit 1,000 posts, but maybe it is not done automatically....

Hmmmmmmmmm...

As of this post you have logged in 1039 posts but have not yet achieved "Gold" status. Check with a mod or admin: it may be an oversight or it may signal a change in membership policy.

You seem to have "long term member" confused with "whiny little bitch".

Just because you're a long term member doesn't mean you're not an arsehole.
