A bad stretch for the GOP leadership in the last couple of weeks:

* Investigations of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's family financial transactions by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

* Two indictments against House Majority Leader Tom DeLay for money laundering (in addition to three official reprimands from the House ethics committee).

* Karl Rove and Scooter Libby testifying (again) under oath to Fitzgerald's investigation of the Plame outing.

* W's popularity polls the lowest of his presidency.

I'm sure the Democrats are behind all of it.

OF COURSE the evil Dems are behind it!!!!!!!!! These are Christian, God fearing and MORAL men, just being slandered and reviled for their faith. That, and they hate cock suckers.

Will it work for me if I start stealing money, commit treason and send young men to their deaths while invading and overthrowing a sovereign nation for their natural resources? If I commit these sins and crimes against humanity in the name of God I won't be prosecuted, will I?

Speedo and Kink Guys...

[overheard in a capitol hill men's room, from the next stall over] hey, my roll is empty. Can one of you spare a little of that wonderfully soft, quilted, absorbant, two-ply US Constitution for me?

I appreciate the humor of some of these posts. But the reality is that our Constitution and our country are in the greatest danger in history. And we cannot educate the far right voters about the totality of the far right agenda. What the hell are we going to do? I am scared to death. Our deficit is out of control. We are hated by most of the world. Everything I planned on for retirement is going or is already gone. We are going to have to build concentration camps for people of my generation and let us die in them because resources for health care and social security are disappearing. The party that claims to value human life, only seems to value it in the womb. Once the life comes out of the womb, there are no safety nets, no help--unless the life is born to extremely wealthy people. We are going to hell under the guise of living for God.

We have to build a political movment that can defeat them.

Um, not ALL the guns, my dear. And some of us have actually been trained to use them. I'm not some second-coming-wannabe survivalist freak like the misguided but illegally raided (and murdered) gents at Waco and Ruby Ridge, but I will defend my little plot here - against burglers or police or federal agents. And my aim is quite, quite accurate.

Good point. Eventually some connection will have to be made between progressives and the military. After all, many of them are working class folks who are risking their lives right now for a war that is not going to help them or their families. And there's always the electoral road... if less toxic forces are in government, the armed forces should follow their direction, at least theoretically. Hopelessly naive?

Also great, but we'll never win each one of us alone. If the bush coalition gets beat, it will take millions of people I think.

Okay, I'm moving in next to you!

I was being silly, but in truth, I believe quite a higher percentage of gunowners are repubs, at least legal gun owners.

When those guys get home they're going to be spent. An easily overlooked difficulty facing them is the lack of support they've gotten back home after they extended stay abroad.

Several guys I've talked to who were told they would only be gone a short time are now finding out that they do not have jobs to come home to and their mortgage holders are placing them in default. It seems their stories are not unique.

Whoa! Nice pic, Madam Z.

The talk about gunfire is discouraging me. While I'm as pissed off at the Republicans as anyone, I'd prefer we found peaceful ways to settle our differences. The last time Americans tried military action against each other we had more dead than both world wars combined and I don't want to see that happen again.

largely as a result of rapidly changing battlefield conditions, though. weapons and tactics were evolving rapidly prior to and during the civil war, thus casualties in certain "coincidental" phases were immense. things are a lot different now, technologically and socially.

Talk about hopelessly naive, I personally wasn't drawing the conclusion of civil war when I aluded to guns. To make it clearer, I am completely against war except as a LAST resort, and we're nowhere close to that for me.

For the most part, I respect the guys in the military for doing what they do, I know I couldn't do it. I was just observing that sometimes a military presence is needed to preserve some modicum of peace, and I can forsee a time when that could happen here.
If one side has more firepower than the other, they are likely to win. If we degenerate all the way back to a "braun over brain" society, all forms of reason will be rendered impotent. I guess my fear is that that is what is happening.

I also prefer a peaceful, reasoned, logical resolution to ANY conflict. I am just saying that if I am minding my own business in my own home and anyone is brave enough to try to force their way in, I won't be the only one taken out in the crossfire. I also think war should be a LAST resort - but I don't think we exhausted our first, second, or sixteenth resorts in the "Iraq conflict." I'm not an isolationist, but to curb the war on terror, I would rather have seen our borders closed than starting a war on the other side of our planet. But all this is way off-topic.

We should be more concerned about fighting a "war on political corruptness" than a "war on terror." After all, isn't our political climate the basis for all these terrorist plots againt us? And one thing that seems to be eclipsed in all the current white house rhetoric - the worst terrorist attack on US soil, prior to 9/11, was not by islamic fanatics, it was by a US citizen, protesting our "liberal" mindset. Anyone remember the Murrow Building?

I do indeed remember the Oklahoma City bombing. I was in OKC when the bomb went off, though well away away from the blast site. Windows still cracked and pictures rattled on walls. Even from that distance it was obvious the damage was horrific downtown.

Since I'm a government employee and could easily have been in the Murrah building that day, I've been haunted by the spectre of threats of violence ever since. Convicted bomber Tim McVeigh was a poster child for the the armed "militia" movement that was gaining strength in the mid 90s. Wingnuts like him were casually tossing around threats about violent otherthrow of the federal government and that, to me, was plenty scary. That's why I'm sensitive when I perceive talk of using violence to achieve political ends.

Right! I'm just saying that I'm surprised that with McVeigh and his terrorist organization being so vocal about the damage they intend to do, why our government doesn't bomb and occupy MCVEIGH'S country and quash the terrorist threat.
