Button up from top. Unbutton from bottom.
Mostly was how we were taught then turned into habit. But let's put some common sense to it. Which way will less likely to misaligned the buttons? You know you hate to find out that you have to undo all the buttons when you get to the last button.Interesting! I do exactly the opposite.
I wonder if this is learned behavior (when Mom taught us how to dress) or if there is some other explanation.
FWIW, I'm right-handed. No idea if that would come into play here.

Maybe you want to show six packs insteadThat accounts for starting at the bottom when putting a shirt on, but I can't think of a logical reason for starting at the bottom when removing a shirt. In fact, if I'm interrupted for any reason while undressing, I'd rather, for example, open the front door with my top two or three buttons undone then with the bottom two or three. One way can look sexy on the right body; the other just looks ridiculous.![]()
I button and unbutton from the top down. (I dress from the inside out: boxers and t-shirt before shirt and trousers, and strip the opposite: shirt and trousers off before t-shirt and briefs, rather than by halves, as my college roommate did.)Watching this WWII series on HBO Max and male lead starts to undress. I can't help noticing that he unbuttons his shirt from the bottom up.
It's weird because, for my entire life, I have always unbuttoned from the top down.
So, how about you?
