when you buy new socks and underwear, are you diligent about tossing away the old ones? For example, if you are buying your own clothes, do you buy a whole rotation of new and discard the old? Or do you pick thru the oldest stuff and try to toss out the same number that you bring in?

Or if your spouse buys your clothes, have you told him/her that you don't want everything randomly tossed away? (Like your favorite pair of boxers, or a sexy pair of briefs that you've had a lot of hot dates with and you want to keep them...?)

And do you guys hand-me down this stuff to the younger guys in the household- or throw it away? Or donate to a thrift store?

I never hand me down underwear. I had a woman that used to steal my boxer briefs. I'd always find them in her drawer.

At the first sign of fray or stretched elastic I toss it. I don't think I've ever done a wholesale turnover. Even when I find something that feels fantastic I'll still keep a few old pair for working out.

I don't have any particular order of throwing away underwear, I throw it away when it loses its support. I wouldn't hand down underwear anyway and my lads wouldn't fit my normal clothes either, my wife has taken some my old clothes that I didn't wear anymore to charity.

I frequent Good Will and Salvation Army stores, though they offer a wide variety of gently used clothing , appliances and nick nacks, I have never seen them accept used under wear / socks.. The only rule may be if they were in the original packaging and unused

I guess even poor people try to draw the line somewhere

Ok ok I’m about to do it soon. It seams I’m better buying them than tossing them.
It’s a revelation moment when you say ok you go to the trash

On an extremely rare occasion a foreign piece of underwear appears in my laundry from the launderette - and I might keep it to dust with. When I get new stuff I don't throw out my old undies automatically. I observe the old underwear to see if it any part of it becomes translucent, transparent or holey. In that condition it becomes sexy underwear IMO. I might eventually enlarge the holes for a laugh. I would disard such undies someday. Any underwear I donate to charity is spanking new.

I think this may not be a nationwide practice, as my local stores do sale men and boys used under wears as of today.

I've never donate clothing to either of these stores (Good Will and Salvation Army), but I do shop there.
A while back, about 10 years or so, when I first discovered these stores from a co-worker that mentioned to me where he would go to get clothes for his son. I did noticed they do have men used underwear (boxers, boxer brief or brief) on the floor for sale. There were a few new ones, but mostly used ones, as I noticed the new ones with the original tags that still intact. I'd though who would buy these? but there are people into that, as if I came back a week or 2 weeks later, they're all gone and other used ones got put out on the floor.

Short of a major blow-out, I usually make underwear last quite awhile before replacing and unless they are swiss cheese, any worn out ones get a second lease on life as cleaning rags first before getting tossed. I've never tried to hand them down and certainly not donated them as there are certain second hand items like one's indelicates or shoes I can't imagine someone actually purchasing.

Usually I just toss out clothes as they get worn out. I never fully replace all my clothes. Some of my underwear is close to 10 years old I bet but they are still in good shape so I keep them. Typically once a year I’ll get a new pack or two of underwear to replace the worn out ones that either got thrown away or I’ll weed through them when I get new ones. My wife buys my underwear usually, just plain white fruit of the loom briefs. Cheap and easy to replace. Socks just get replaced all the time, I wear them out quick for some reason. I always have a few extra new packs laying around.
