I think the article is making more out of it politically than it is. It wouldn't be successful here not because everyone is "transphobic" as they say, but because most people in the market for a new truck simply wouldn't be very interested in a girlie boi in a bikini. Sometimes I think "Meh" is forcibly interpreted as "I HATE GAY PEOPLE!!!!" a little too freely.

that is an interesting point. the ad is being aired in japan, a country that seems to embrace this sort of androgyny much more enthusiastically in its media

The point of the article, I believe is... The commercial wouldn't play here, because of the model used.
