Something I thought of, but am not sure if it would work....

What if there was a thread of Members who should be banned, much like this one.. where members cna voice their opinion, and comment on people who really dont belong here?

It would be INCREDIBLY MEAN......

well YAH!

Especially since I'd be the first on the freaking list

jeff much as I understand you want to better things here I think that job's best left to our tireless moderators.

You are right, Stronzo. It is my fault really, I am one of those people who prefers to stand up, and destroy any problems, rather than sitback and wait for someone else to do it.

I like this place ALOT, and it is good 90% of the time. Sometimes, there are people who just fuck it up.. and that makes me angry... So, forgive me for being rude, but I think I will keep on yelling and screaming, with hopes that someone hears me:biggrin1:

This is the wikipedia defintion of an Internet troll:

In Internet terminology, a troll is someone who comes into an established community such as an online discussion forum, and posts inflammatory, rude, repetitive or offensive messages designed intentionally to annoy and antagonize the existing members or disrupt the flow of discussion.

Of course as Wikipedia is open to abuse the above could have been written by a troll.

Alternatively:

A troll is a fearsome member of a mythical anthropomorph race from Scandinavian folklore. Their role ranges from fiendish giants – similar to the ogres of English fairy tales – to a devious, more human-like folk of the wilderness, living underground in hills or mounds.

I much prefer the second one...trolls here are irritating but not at all fearsome. I agree with the view you have to draw a line somewhere, perhaps 5 independent complaints made to the mods with evidence= 1 month ban? Repeat and you're out? But being able to come right back as Troll2 rather negates the efficacy of a ban.

It's not something I've really found a problem. I'd say solong was the nearest I've seen to a troll here and only then because we crossed swords. Sometimes it's hard to tell the trolls from the assholes but the drivel they write is equally easy to spot, and ignore.

Shout them down or ignore them. Group censure has worked here in the past and I think it can work in the future.
I'm honestly not trying to be obnoxious, or even beat a dead horse, BUT... Why bother to list trollism as grounds for banning in the TOS, and list what is considered trollism in the same TOS, if being a blantant troll, and doing exactly what it says will result in you being banned, doesn't, in fact, get you banned?

Because everyone doesn't always agree on what a "blatant troll" is. Robert Fish, for example, was banned for trolling. I'm sure almost everyone would agree in that case, but not every case is so clear. And often when it's not, the Moderators might lean on the side of free speech, especially if the member in question contributes other things. Or, a warning might be sent instead of a ban. In other words, when this arises, the Moderators will examine it on a case-by-case basis. When the majority of Moderators agree, members can be, have been, and will continue to be banned for trolling.

But everyone else has the same right of free speech too, and that includes the right to challenge what they find obnoxious or offensive. You may have noticed a few of our members exercising that right. And just to stress it one more time - no one should be shy about using the ignore function. I know it's vindicating to see someone you hate get banned, but it's just not always going to happen.

Very good response, Matthew. (Funny how it always seems to be the same people looking to have someone banned).

I think some here would have banning amount to a popularity contest where anyone expressing an unpopular or even an opposing point of view (or expressing it in a way "they" find offensive) would end up being banned. Based on that criteria, I think that'd apply to half of the posters here (depending on one's own point of view of course).

It'd get so people would be apprehensive about posting any commentary at all not acceptable to the "prevailing" opinion. What a boring place it would be then, eh?

Well, as for me, I've only actively sought two people being banned, one the aforementioned Fish (who was in fact banned), the second was Bella, and just about anyone who chatted with "her" thought was Fish returned ("she" popped up around when Fish was banned, and suddenly went away, but may be back as personna #3). If you look back at my posts, I'm not lobbying for anyone to be banned in them, I'm asking about banning, as a practice, and pointing out that I think that there seem to be people that cross the line that don't get banned (Bella, being a great example), as well as asking how others managed to get banned when I'd never encountered them doing anything wrong.

I really don't get offended that easily, and basically just skip over posts of people whose opinions I give no value, or simply find boring. That being said, there are a couple people that I've actually grown close to here, whose opinions I don't share in the least. Still, we find common grounds on other levels. Sometimes we spar, and it's great to be challenged by someone who actually thinks, and makes me defend my point. But that's just it, people like Fish and Bella come on here with the sole intent of disrupting things, spewing libel, and/or hatred, when the rest of us form a pretty good community, whether we do or don't agree on issues. It's not that they say things that aren't popular, it's that they say things that are hateful ("I wouldn't bother to piss on him if he were on fire", and when asked what sparked this sentiment, got, "he wore mauve pants" WTF? ), or start hate threads against a person they don't even know, and giving no sane reason for all this hatred.

I also have to give it to Rob and the Mods, because they really are "moderate". On another board I belong to, not having the "prevailing opinion" gets people banned, or threats of a ban from the owner all the time. The group is really fantastic, but it's the owner that's a childish ass, allowing for no differing opinions, even on subjects he doesn't know anything about, offering no other retort than a very bitchy, "it's MY site", then complains that we don't bring in enough new members. Unfortunately, it's a pretty specific subject, and is the only decent game in town.

I can see how it might seem that way in some cases, Novice. Keep in mind that some people who are not banned may have received a warning to clean up their act, and what other people have done to deserve a ban may not be visible to the board. For example, it's possible that someone who was posting with multiple accounts may have appeared to everyone else to be "playing nice." Both of those examples would not be known to anyone but the Mods.

No, I know that, and I get it. It's kinda why I somewhat suggested in an earlier post...

...I'd love to see:
I was banned! - underage
I was banned! - trollism
I was banned! - racism
I was banned! - multi-accts

etc...

There are a few people that I've had great exchanges with, that I didn't see any odd posts from, that were banned the next day, and I have no idea why.
I DO hope you also noticed the praise above, and not just the part about my being mystified by banning practices.
