And I don't think that the Black Lives Matter movement helps anyone. It makes white people who are being screamed at nervous and less likely to see black people in a favorable light, not more. And it tells (primarily young) black men and women that they are considered inferior in our society and have to fight that by screaming about the color of their skin. And that's wrong, they fight that by ignoring the morons who still think skin color is relevant and hang out with those of us who know better and value them as friends and colleagues.

"Screamed at" is loaded language that mis-characterizes the movement overall and is set up as a straw man argument (because now the whole movement is characterized as nothing more than a bunch of angry black people screaming in the face of otherwise sympathetic white people).

It's primarily an awareness movement, which is difficult to measure, but you can trace successes of the movement to everything from the removal of certain confederate flags / monuments in recent years to the resignation of a college president over mishandling of racist behavior on campus to a (white) Federal judge directly using the phrase "black lives matter" in a court ruling.

If your concern is over the extent to which protests by black people can be counter-productive in the reception of white people
a) what else is new?
b) have a talk with Fox news, which focuses like a laser only on protest activities which have any resulting violence.

I'd object to you so often beating me to the punch, if you didn't so often say it more eloquently than I would have.

I meant precisely what I said - While I understand how BLM came to be, I don't think it's helpful for the reasons I listed. And whether it's the fault of the BLM organizers, Fox news, GWB, Donald Trump or Mickey Mouse - the perception of the movement is what matters, not the intent.

So civil rights protests should halt because racist white people intentionally mischaracterize them in the media?

Wut?

Damn glad you weren't one of MLK's trusted advisors :p

Screaming at, or speaking civilly, no benefit.

No need to convince me. See above.

Not going to convince a bigot. Waste of time and energy.

Not at all. I think that civil protest is a part of what makes our society strong. I just don't think that it's helpful in the current form. And would prefer to see effective moves toward colorblindness.

Please don't expect TRUMP to come out of his corner and say he deplores the actions of one group of his inclusive American supporters. Even when the president was only elect there was a great deal of phoney raised arm action celebrating what they saw as being a defining moment in American history and hope for covert support from the President for the White Supremacy wishes.
And hey, look who fails to condemn murder!
And who is secretly being hailed as protectors of the faith?
Love the spokesperson saying that the president HAD actually condemned the action by condemning all sides - but then all sides were not involved in MURDER.
Maybe now the American electorate will come to realise which direction the president favours, that there will be better treatment for some groups of American society, that he will not be either fair or just.
There will be a backlash, and hopefully forcefully, for a President has to be able to judge the mood of the occasion as well as the mood of the people.
This president doesn't have the brain to be able to do that, he even fails to listen to the best advise and while his family came out and made statements the president was
for once

He read it like he was making a hostage video, after he told us all how great he is making the economy. The dog whistles have already been blown. Too little, too late.

The same way he read his previous "apology" from the man who is incapable of self-examination and what one could leisurely call "shame". When you're born rich and had everything given to you, you never have to apologize for anything.

In general your arguments, which seem quite reasonable on the surface were used by white moderates against the Civil Rights movement when it was led by Dr. King in the 50's and 60's. He addressed many of them in his "Letter from Birmingham Jail."

I still say better late than never.

For those who's lives are now changed permanently, too little too late is forever.

And... words only have impact when the person saying them stands behind them. Trump stands for nothing but himself. His apology was forced.

He can go fuck himself.

Despite a great deal of piling on, I see no posts here other than telling people to fuck themselves, that they are evil, incapable of self-examination. That's all great, and while venting and name-calling may make people feel better (though it doesn't seem to have worked here), it certainly does nothing to move us...

...toward colorblindness.

I don't feel better. I'm angry as fuck and I'm not going to pretend to not be.

It's not my job to move this conversation towards racial equality. I've stood behind that my entire life, as a bi-racial individual. It's the leaders we've elected into office who have the obligation to LEAD their constituency towards a brighter future. (Of course, as citizens we must do our part to stand up for equality... and I have, and do. I speak up, I vote. I participate as much as I can in my life.)

This 'president' has made it clear to those paying attention where he stands. I've been speaking out for 'color-blindness' my whole fucking life. Trump gets no credit from me for giving an obviously forced statement.
