So a statue is a celebration? It is also to acknowlege an event. Removing it in the name of PC is revising our history. So now it's gone so we don't have to see it, recall it. Removed. Gone. As will be the lessons learned.

Civil war is covered in school. Public spaces don't necessarily exist to educate you about civil war history. Go read a book.

A serious question: those who fight so ardently to keep these statues in place, what lessons do you think they derive from them?

Not being a southerner, I cannot speak to what this represents, from either side. I personally don't care, I don't care who won the war, but don't approve of the overall direction or precedence it sets. What's next, as so many here love to ask? Who decides for me? It's history, it happened, and it helps us remember, the good, the bad, and so we can learn. But, hey, personal offense is a bigger issue today than remembering our history, where we were, and how far we've come.

I'm not a southerner myself, but I suspect you're giving too much credit to those marching on behalf of the statues. They may want to "remember our history" (in very selective ways) and look back with nostalgia on "where we were," but I seriously doubt they see the statues as an affirmation of "how far we've come."

Sort of like art, my friend. Personal, can offend at times, and always in the eye of the beholder. But evokes thought and reflection. And who is now deciding what art remains, and what goes?

You probably don't want to go there. Decisions about what art goes where, particularly in public spaces, are made all the time.

Most annoying piece of public art, even moreso than confederate statues, is that fucking girl in front of the bull on wall street.

Goddamn that installation is stupid for so many reasons.

Revisionist history is when those you defend say that slavery wasn't evil. They say the Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. In other words, the way you want us to see things.

And you probably are completely unaware of the bull's significance.

Re-read what I wrote and then tell me what you think the bull's significance is.

I'll make it easier for you...

Jesus, someone needs to reign in your stupidity and ignorance. Fortunately, the only danger you pose is to yourself (and perhaps those who like your posts).

Perhaps. But we are really talking about statues, and history.

The statues, most of them put up decades after the war, are themselves a kind of revisionist history. History is always written from one point of view or another; that's inescapable.

More to the point, I think, is that these statues are not just historical reminders, but commemorations of a defeated, discredited system, displayed in public spaces. I don't see why they have to be accorded that kind of prominence. By all means, let them serve their historical function, but in more discreet and contextualized surroundings like a museum.

You're seeking empathy, compassion and morality from those who have none. It's a lost cause.

Exactly. Who the fuck is jz trying to kid with his call for "objectivity"? They and their politicians have shown only UTTER contempt for objectivity, middle ground, or compromise. They even have a NAME for any among them even CONSIDERING it... CUCKSERVATIVE:

The only hope is the 90 million that sat home on election day now see the result of sitting it out.

THIS. For (how many?) months before the election I have been writing "WAKE THE FUCK UP AMERICA."

NOW maybe some of that 90 mil will crack open an EYE...

............ MAYBE.
