Trump Wants Foreign Help(again)

Trump held up the delivery of $250 million in military assistance to Ukraine, which is under constant threat from neighboring Russia. He had a phone conversation on July 25 with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian government, the call included a discussion of Ukraine’s need to “complete investigation of corruption cases, which inhibited the interaction between Ukraine and the USA.”

So it appears that the president might have used his official powers — in particular, perhaps the threat of withholding a quarter-billion dollars in military aid — to leverage a foreign government into helping him defeat a potential political opponent in the United States.

If Trump did that, it would be the ultimate impeachable act. Trump has already done more than enough to warrant impeachment and removal with his relentless attempts, on multiple fronts, to sabotage the counterintelligence and criminal investigation by then-special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and to conceal evidence of those attempts.

Trump has done plenty to warrant impeachment. But the Ukraine allegations are over the top.

When the July 24 congressional testimony of special counsel Robert S. Mueller III deflated the impeachment hopes of Democrats, President Trump crowed “no collusion” and claimed vindication from accusations that he had conspired with Russia in the 2016 election.

Then, the very next day, Trump allegedly sought to collude with another foreign country in the coming election — pressing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to dig up what he believed would be damaging information about one of his leading Democratic challengers, former vice president Joe Biden, according to people familiar with the conversation.

We haven’t seen anything like this in my lifetime,” said William A. Galston, a senior fellow in governance at the Brookings Institution who graduated from college just before Watergate. “He appears to be daring the rest of the political system to stop him — and if it doesn’t, he’ll go further.”

Who is supposed to enforce the law? Bill Barr? (insert: hysterical laugh track) That's the reality of the situation. Trump has packed the Supreme Court and the DOJ. He controls Republicans in Congress. The House stands alone. How does the House enforce anything if the courts rule against them?

It's time to wake up to the seriousness of our situation.

I wouldn't COUNT on it. Pelosi wouldn't know an impeachable offense if it snuck up and bit her IN THE ASS.

[for the grammar police, spare me snide sht about using "snuck" instead of "sneaked." ...know all about it, and SNUCK is what I choose to use. k?]

I think she knew the Mueller Report wasn't enough. Even his testimony didn't move the needle any. She's got a difficult task trying to please the progressive members of her caucus vs. the moderates. All have to remain in office to retain control of the House. House democrats haven't had a very good week.

Visuals are what matter right now. So what if the GOP controlled Senate won't convict. Present the evidence of Trump's guilt to the American people. When the Senate refuses to do anything to stop him the Democrats will then be able to show that keeping them in power shows that respect for the law means nothing to them. Not moving to impeach just sends the message that we know he's wrong but won't do anything about it.

I hear you. Pelosi doesn't think she has the votes is another reason. There are a few prominent democrats not all on board. We know the progressive wing is all on-board. But the rest.....

Moderate Democrats warn Pelosi of impeachment obsession

She will have to walk the tightrope to appease as much as she can. Yes they remind us of the blue-dog democrats that imperiled the ObamaCare vote way back when and then lost their seats anyway. But she can't throw them under the bus. If they don't vote for impeachment and the Repubs never will in the end it will look very bad politically not morally I know. But what will it matter if you lose.

Centrist Democrats are back. But these are not your father’s Blue Dogs.
