Those are only brand names. In my town there are factory bakeries that make the very same things with six different brand names on them, including Twinkie-generics. It's only Hostess that's going bankrupt. Honestly, the things people think are news!

Well, IMO, the generic knock offs are never as good as the real thing.

my family have shopped at Aldi's for upwards of 25 years, and the one thing that they've never been able to get quite right, are the snacky cakes like Twinkies, and Ding Dongs.

Little Debbie does alright, what with their Swiss Cake Rolls, but that's about it.

There are lots of Little Debbies that have Ding Dongs - I've seen whole websites devoted to them.....

Yeah. That's what I mean, the brand "Little Debbie" has good versions of the Hostess stuff, like Ho Ho's, Twinkies, and whathaveyou.

Store brand knockoffs, a la Aldi's, just not as good, I've found. They're drier and don't have as much taste, IMO.

Ask people who have worked in the food factories what the difference is for the generic store brands and name brands. Answer, not much. A few pounds a sugar per ton of flour, or sometimes not even that much - just different bags.

QFT - sometimes the 'no name' stuff is actually excess brand name stuff that has been repackaged. Perfectly edible and still suitable for human consumption but for one reason or another could not be sold by the factory name, so was sold to generic brands.

Exactly. When I briefly worked at Malt-o-Meal, we shoveled the same puffs and O's etc. into all variety of boxes, including 'bigname' brands.

well, not directly into the boxes; into the hopper that fed the machine that filled boxes.

I just thought it sounded like a fun topic and I thought the links I put up were funny, but that's good to know.

If the generic brands come from the same factories, obviously they're the same, but listing ingredient similarities doesn't mean that the end product is the same, especially with baked goods. As an amateur baker I knew very well, to my great frustration sometimes, that the exact same ingredients can produce very different results!

I literally cannot remember the last time I had a Twinkie. It has to have been over a dozen years, easily. The idea of never getting to have one again makes me want one right now!
For me, it was perhaps six months.
It is a real but very limited delicacy.
A world without Twinkies would be ... a world without Twinkies.

I can't remember the last time I had a twink...or a twinkie.
Growing up I was seriously into Ho-Hos tho.
All of this seems so ... plausible.

Eh, I'd still legalize pot first, that would have a better chance of keeping them afloat.
Oh, why not?
