in Burger King in the US the burgers were the size of a small plate! Much bigger than what we have over here...

I've popped into BK in Piccadilly Circus and other spots, and I suspect that what's more commonly served over there is similar to what we in the US call the Whopper Jr., vs the american Whopper.

Went to a "New York style" deli here in Florida the other day and they prided themselves on serving "overstuffed sandwiches" -- just like what the snowbirds expect when they dine out up north. The damn things are literally 10 cm high or more.

I am aghast at the gigantic portion sizes one finds at many restaurants here in the US. I'm sure that there's a metric used by the corporate bean counters whereby profits are maximized via inflated portions and inflated prices. I am a large man and could easily split a meal at many of the chain restaurants.

Of additional concern is that everything seems drenched in some form of oil, saturated with salt and/or loaded with sugar.

I though we have held that title for years? Striving to be #1 in the world.

No we like SUV's because they are gas hogs. V8, over sized wheels, spinners, tinted windows and the largest we can buy.

Indeed we have held that title.

Could it be Paula Deen's Deep Fried Mac and Cheese that's the problem? She doesn't bother with any nutritional information since I'm sure you've nailed them all for 2 or 3 days with each serving.

Its all part of the global peace initiative. We're all going to get too fat to fight and instead have to resole our disputes over a burger, fries and a milkshake. McDonald 's and BK are part of it. They're even in China now. It's the fat world order. Embrace it.

I was just thinking of this very thing the other night when I had the vast misfortune to click on a American show called "Man verses Food".

Christ!

The sheer gluttony was enough to make me feel ill.

I'm planning a leisurely evening watching this while eating dinner. Oh, on the menu tonight: Chicken fried stake, french fries in cheddar sauce and for dessert, fried twinkle. Mmm Mmmm!

Thanks goodness I was worried.

Don't hate on Paula just look at her. She is very clear in her position on food.

I miss my pre-car body. Walking at least 45 minutes a day to get home when I was a kid. I should start doing that again... but I hate walking without a specific destination (or need to be at the destination to be more exact).

Having been to the US I am amazed at the portion sizes you get in restaurants. Even the burgers at McDonalds are larger than what you get in the UK...

This is definately a lot of the problem.
I went to the US before and the medium chips and drinks were the size of the large ones back home. Plus everything seemed to be greasier. I also noted it tasted worse for some reason.

The good news is that people seem to realize obesity is on the rise and people seem to be trying to be healthier and stuff. The problem is that the unhealthy food cost less than the healthy food, which doesn't help considering money has been kinda tight for most people these last couple of years.

What scientists should do is invent some kind of way to make all the healthy food taste like chocolate or fast food without making it less healthy. And the government could mandate prices or something so the healthy stuff is cheaper. Obesity would disappear in a decade.

Well, just think with rising fuel prices and peak oil a forgone conclusion other modes of transport eg. walking, riding a bike, are going to become a necessity.

No surprise to me. Food companies make junk food in large quantities cheaper than healthier foods, which cost more for less and don't usually taste as good. In today's shitty and greedy economy, which one do you think the average person will pick?

wanna know how fucked up the american diet is? try to order a vegan/vegetarian meal in most restaurants.

salads are more toppings/dressing than veg.
pastas are swimming in cream/cheese based sauces.
*blech face*

i'm lucky my folks raised me eating good for me foods. veggies over sweeties. natural over processed.

with Ms. Petite in the "can we please get a sidewalk/bike lane" location.
since i don't travel with a small person i brave the ditches, snakes and pitch black.. sucks that infrastructure *lack of* makes roaming limited.

while ranting.. what the hell happened to kids playing outside?
my folks had to hunt me down every evening to get me home. outside was/is the bomb.

re MLs take on it.............

Honestly dont want to be cheeky / nasty, but 40 odd years ago i recall 'seeing' this happening with the USA, even then
Several of my mates and i often sat around pondering over what the USA was leading there people into, not in a nasty way, just idle conversation amongst friends
Common ta;lk was the 'fast food' biz, in particular McDs & Kentucky Fried.
(did i leave out Coca Cola)

even tho we were getting fed all Brtish stuff, well Americanized stuff was just comming into the Country, never ceased to amaze us, and we often mentioned,
'wonder what it will be like in 50 years time'...that time has come... it seems
unfortunatly some of the Pacific Island folk have adopted some of these nasty habits.....bucket loads of Kentucky Fried often headed over to the Islands from here.............. gee trading there wonderful fish diet, for greasy chicken..................

Well that goes back to 1987 when all of the child molesters were released from the prisons to prey on the little suburban angels. Since then it's been safer to keep the little sweeties on the xbox with a bag of cheese puffs and a bottle of Mountain Dew.
