Any sufficiently advanced race that can travel or even communicate across interstellar (or even interplanetary) distances would have to have some sort of scientific and technical research. The "why" question is really simple to answer in that context; if they can reach us easily enough, then the scientific nature of the race indicates they would study us.

While I believe in life elsewhere, I don't think they've yet made contact with us...and even if they could...why?

I think that the distance between planets would make it nearly impossible to find life elsewhere, although I do believe it exists. Since many planets are thousands, if not millions of light-years away, and nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, even if an extraterrestrial race had spaceships that could travel the speed of light, it would take them thousands if not millions of years to get from one inhabited planet to another.

Of course the science fiction fan in me wants to meet these aliens! And me being me, I want to know what extraterrestrial music sounds like!

If they are so technologically advanced that they can reach us and study us then why would they allow themselves to be seen. o_o;

If there were intellegent life studying our planet and ourselves, I think we have to assume that they would not want themselves to be seen for obvious reasons; If you were a spy in a foreign country you wouldn't announce your presence. Whilst the majority of "developed countries" has the forethought and intellegence to greet peaceful folk with open arms, there is the rest of our planet to think about - the "developed world" only accounts for about a quarter of the worlds population (free to be corrected on that figure) ...the rest of the world, with it's lack of advancement and religious backwardness could, possibly, cause wars and the like with visitors. (for reference point, see Mexican border!)

Besides which, they're probably not here anyway!!
