So it seems lately on the dating apps I am getting a lot of catfish attempts. I am trying to wrap my head around it.

What do they get from catfishing anyways? And why do they seem so driven to move to other chat platforms?

These are people who feel inadequate in themselves. They have the same needs to connect to others as normal people. By taking on another identity they get the thrill of being wanted or desired by someone.

They are connecting to people but it's built on a lie.

It's like living on the smell of pie without eating it, but for them it's better than nothing.

There is another category of catfish.

These are the ones that use a fake hot pic for their profile with also fake nude pics.

They use them to try to get your real nude pics in return.

But are all they are after are pics? Seems a lot of work for something you can find a ton of for free all over the web.

Still trying to figure out why they want to use other chat apps.

As I said in my first post, some do it for the fantasy. Video games allow people to excape reality and be someone else. A kind of wish fulfillment.

The western media often dictates male beauty to be young, muscular, white, tall, able bodied and under 10% body fat. What chance has an old, weak, fat, ethnic, dwarf in a wheelchair got at having a sexually explicit conversation with a so called beauty in real life?

I am not justifying it, it is disgusting but I can understand why someone like that would do it.

Several decades ago, back in the Yahoo and AOL chatroom days I traded pics with potential partners. It happened more than once that I received my own pics back from someone claiming it as his own. This blew my mind since the point of these exchanges was to facilitate a real world meeting where they would be easily found out. Obviously I called these guys out in the main chat room.

I used to always reverse google search photos that people gave me. That weeded out a large proportion of catfish for me.

That’s a great idea, something I wouldn’t think to do. Thanks for the suggestion.

Remember that some of us are old enough to remember 9.9 baud dialup modems. We lived the magical transition from the 5-1/4 to the 3-1/2 floppy disk. And many of us booted to the ubiquitous C: prompt. Amazing that my watch and microwave have more computing power than my first home built computer.

Not sure how you 'reverse search' s photo? If someone sends you a pic, how do you research it? Sorry, I'm not that tech savvy.

1. Assuming you are using your phone, go to www.google.com then click on "images" to get into google image search.

2. In the top right hand corner of your browser (not the website itself) you can go into the dropdown menu and select "request desktop site"

3. When you do this, you will see a camera icon appear in the right side of the search bar. Click on this and it will give you the option of browsing your files where you can find the picture you saved.

Google will then search for all visually similar photos.

Technology is great. Oddly we are more connected and disconnected to the people around us at the same time.

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

I think they have learned that trick. It's easy to grab someone else's pic now, so you can keep them pretty individual. I had a few who sent me pics a reverse lookup did not work for. Ironically they were also stupid enough to send me two different supposed pics of themselves that weren't even of the same nationality. I mean how stupid do you think I am?

So it might be a 60 year old woman saying on line that she's a HOT 26 year old stud to string you along, get you to fall in love with 'him' for the sole reason of manipulating you. It could be just to be malicious, or to give her the selfish joy that she has gotten someone to fall for her. In the end, it's all about her deceiving you.
