So today while I was changing after a swim today I got a bit of attitude from 2 others. I wore speedos as did they since swimming for fitness or they may be competitive who knows. After showering I slipped on my briefs and was standing in the mirror, shaving when one guy scoffed and told me to cover up. My briefs probably were larger than my swimsuit.

I've always kinda wondered anyway why the majority of straight men, in North America at least, are so critical of certain styles of underwear. In recent years tighter underwear has become more popular amongst most men. Which is great. But why are skin tight white compression shorts that go down to the knee yet leave nothing to the imagination in the junk department acceptable but a pair of briefs are considered geeky or lame.

I have heard of many men straight and gay who are more afraid of being seen in "embarrassing" underwear than naked. Why does choosing to wear briefs or even a jockstrap reduce the amount of masculinity or diminish confidence if others knew?

If you found out your best bro secretly wore male thong underwear would that change the relationship? How does someone else's clothing choice actually affect you?

Why does concealing more of your body equate to manliness?

Any thoughts to help me understand.

It doesn’t decrease anyone’s masculinity

I wear briefs a lot and jocks for the gym, some tanga styles etc it’s mostly a comfort thing for me

I get people thinking I’m straight up gay etc just because of it. People for some reason just equate certain styles as being gay. (Not entirely convinced of the science of it il be honest. Probably stereotyping… I’ve had it when I wear Versace trunks as well…. Dunno… some folk just have it in their heads that if you wear a jockstrap your a raging gay man…. Best not tell em I get a pedicure every couple of months then….

I think as well certainly in the men’s locker room some guys instinctively want some kind of sign that someone is gay or straight so they know who they can and can’t talk to…

#insecurities - there’s not mine

Underwear are generally 99% of the time concealed , under ones outer garments. As a self deputized, member of the fashion police, I have been known to give unrequested advice on how something should fit, or color / fabric in certain seasons. Possible the Locker room division of the squad, flagged something inappropriate with your under garment selection

I wear bikini/tanga briefs probably 90% of the time and thongs 10% of the time (including in locker rooms) and nothing else, so just general thoughts...

- For most guys below a certain age in the US they weren't the trend growing up. Boxers seemed to have become the more popular style in the US around 1990. So basically any guy under 50 saw the baggy underwear trend catch on when they were in high school and there's peer pressure to fit in, not seem nerdy, not have anyone question your sexuality, etc.

- They're perceived as more feminine because they might resemble women's panties. (And women obviously wear briefs/thongs because they're practical (fit the lines/contours of the body), so it's a weird double standard.)

- Baggier/longer underwear covers up more, so is considered more modest and less revealing. If you're caught in your underwear, would you rather be seen in something that looks like shorts or something that shows just about everything?*

So I think it's partially a body image thing and many guys believing they don't look good in briefs. The US has lots of larger people whereas in Asia, for example, being overweight is less common.

- Potential associations of briefs/thongs/jockstraps with the gay community.

- A lot of it is cultural. I think in the US boxers became more popular because of hip hop culture. In many countries they never caught on and most guys wear briefs.

- Some people are immature and have to make judgments and have opinions on things that they know nothing about or don't affect them.

__

* Cool story – At my old gym the men's and women's locker rooms were temporarily closed down, so both men and women had to use the family locker room together (and hence stay covered up).

Most guys would expose their boxers or boxer briefs before putting their pants on and nobody cared because the longer, baggier underwear showed no thigh, no butt contour, no genital contour. So they almost seem normal to expose because they're not that much different from regular shorts.

I got down to a shirt and bikini briefs before dressing fully and noticed people looking. A female employee even came in, looked and smiled, like she had walked in on something.

I wear boxers, briefs, jockstraps, and occasionally boxer briefs.
It's a frigging locker room. If some guy is so insecure about his sexuality that seeing another man in a pair of briefs makes him uncomfortable, he's got suppressed feelings he doesn't know how to deal with.

I walk around naked in the locker room after my shower. If I didn't shave in the shower I'd be standing naked at the sink shaving.
It's a mens locket room, you should expect that you're going to see a hairy ass and some other guys dick and set of balls. If that offends you you probably shouldn't be in the mens locker room.

I really couldn't care less what kind of underwear people wear, or whether they're wearing any at all. It's their choice. If they're friends I don't see how their choice of underwear could possibly affect the relationship -- it's still their choice. If a thong makes them happy then great. It's not as if I'm gonna happier if they wore a certain style of underwear.

People who find the sight of a man in his underwear, whatever style it may be, in the locker room (of all places!) offensive shouldn't use the locker room. It's never their business.

I appreciate the effort to put some underwear. Lots of older people tend to do everything nude and you have to avoid to step on somebody’s balls.
If you found out your best bro secretly wore male thong underwear would that change the relationship? How does someone else's clothing choice actually affect you?
Since is my friend is my privilege and duty to make him to accept his choice of clothing to strike the secretly, offering better choices. Basically this is made making fun of him.

Someone else couldn’t care less.

Personally I don’t like briefs looks old overheat the junk has little space and do a unwanted push-up effect.

I will tell you one thing that annoys me. That's being in a locker room and some guy who is 50+ lbs overweight is standing in front of a mirror naked combing his hair. I don't care that he's combing his hair or is naked, but I want to scream, "Go on a freaking diet". No I don't say that out loud!!!

If they are in the locker room they are at least making the effort to better themselves. You can't assume to know the story of everyone who is overweight.

You're right It doesn't hurt anyone but it will still change people perception others. As for why it's just society I guess. Things are more associated with women so I guess that's why it would be seen as weird.

I personally hate being confined so I always wear boxers that arnt tight.
