I've never worn anything under boardshorts, trunks, "boy-short", or speedos. I can't see why you would really...but, like it has been said, to each their own.

Actually, I don't wear boardshorts at all anymore. I'm short to start with, 5'8", and the long legs of the shorts make me look even shorter and ill-proportioned. So I either wear short trunks (like old school PE shorts) or, my favourite for real swimming (or showing off), boy-short style speedos with a "pouch" in front...keeps everything in place during a hard swim...and shows off my junk nicely.

Think Daniel Craig as 007 (http://www.evilbeetgossip.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/craig-speedo.jpg). Ok, maybe not quite.

I think it is because they always wear underwear. And I believe that board shorts are supposed to be worn commando.

How is wet underwear different from wearing wet swimtrunks? It's still basically wet pants...

Anyway, Yes, there is a difference, but I just find it a bit vulgar... I know I wouldn't want my little girl to see the print of someone's cock through their pants. (Or my son some lady's camel toe...) It's understood that men have penises.

Bottom line, that was my reason.

Swimwear is usually designed to dry fast. Cotton underwear does not. Just more chance of getting a rash I think. But to each his own. My first lifeguard instructor wore boxer briefs under his guard shorts.

Wearing underwear under boardshorts just shows how much of a poseur you are and how little you know about actual surfing. Boardshorts are designed WITHOUT a liner for a specific purpose...to prevent water rash! Boardshorts are a very purpose-built article of clothing. The waves breaking on shore churns up lots of sand and debris that is in suspension. Board shorts do not have liners, nor do they have elastic waistband so that the water, and any solid sand and other material that gets between the wearer and the shorts, will simply flow back out, and not get trapped inside, where it will grind and chafe against the skin. Wearing boxers, or worse, briefs defeats this purpose, because while the liquid may flow out, the sand and grit gets trapped in, and OUCH...severe rash!

Board shorts also have other purpose-built attributes to them as well. They are long NOT to be modest, but to protect the wearer's thighs from rubbing against the rough surface of the surboard while paddling out to catch a wave. The surface of the surfboard is rough so that one can grip it with bare feet while standing on the board.

Board shorts are also typically made of usually fast-drying dacron material not to be clingy, but so they are lightweight and don't trap water. When your shorts dry quickly, there's less a chance of them getting funky and stinky on hot-humid summer days. Again, wearing underwear, especially cotton ones, defeats this yet again. Quick-drying shorts also reduces the risk of chafing.

My favorite board shorts are Birdwells...they are made extremely well, not very flashy like the Quicksilvers and O'neills, but are very functional...they can also be bought in different inseam lengths.

I don't get how wearing underwear under your suit in the pool is unsanitary and bad for the filters, mayby I am wierd but I actually have underwear (briefs) specifically for wearing under my board shorts. And given the fact that I have never seen a person shower before getting in a home pool, I don't see what could cause an issue, isn't that what the chlorine is for anyway?

I started wearing a speedo under my guards suit when I was 15. It was actually a really high cut bikini style, it kept my ass and junk from rubbing on the mesh of the suit-- which I eventually cut out-- and since the shorts were rather short, I needed something to keep everything in check.

To injoyinit's point, I do still wear somethign under my boards at the beach, normally a pair of sport briefs from CK. They are from the discontinued XT line and they dry really quickly. However after a long day of swimming at the beach there is some sand in the briefs-- not a lot, but some-- maybe the Atlantic does not kick up as much as others?

Even in my pre-Speedos/bikini days, I never wore cotton uw or any uw under my board shorts. What an awful, uncomfortable idea! Now, I mostly wear bikini or thong swimwear but occasionally short swim shorts for swimming and tanning. If I wear anything under my swimwear, its a cock ring!

it's just the style these days. a few years back everyone was wearing "bathing suits", which had the netting inside...now most guys wear "boardshorts" which are pretty much a thinner, long pair of shorts. i wear underwear under mine because the boardshorts are white and yellow...and very see thru...no underwear probably wouldnt be very appropriate.

I was just going to make this point. The board shorts are white a lot of the time and when wet...well you can see right though them. So I get why they have undies on...

now what about a guy that puts his jock strap over his speedo? :0= I did that one time just to freak out one of the female swimmers....she found it gross...to funny it's just cloth like my suit!

Okay I see why in a body suit you would wear a speedo, I always wondered if people were just naked under there or what.

I wear underwear under my bathing suit not because it's conservative or i'm trying to hide anything. When i was younger, probably 13, I was at the beach and the sand actually scraped the tip of my penis and the pain if you can imagine was excruciating for some time. I had to borrow my infant cousins circumcision cream to help it heal faster. Ever since then I have worn underwear under my bathing suit. I'm 22 now. For some it may be due to a conservative style but in my case it's because of a fairly "traumatic" injury from the sand.

I have had the same thing happen dude. Just a little beach sand stuck in the seams at the crotch of your board shorts is all it takes too.

Also boardies that fit just right when dry tend to get looser when they get wet so they try to slide down. Wearing a speedo underneath helps keep them up. Nothing worse than loosing your board shorts while surfing or wakeboarding.

As a surfer, I agree with most of what you say except that the long shorts are needed to protect from chafe.

We didn't have chafe problems when boardshorts were short, they lengthened along with the trend in all men's shorts. I have also surfed naked many times and never had a chafe problem except on my ribs from upperbody movement when paddling. Chafing the ribs is a problem taken care of by wearing a rash vest.

Few of the ladies surf in long boardshorts, theirs are short or they surf in bikinis. We are a bunch of sissies if we need long shorts to protect our thighs.

If you're talking about teenage and twentysomething guys wearing their boxers or boxer briefs under board shorts i'm pretty sure its for style. whether that was the original intent or not, i'm not sure, but not i think its just the style.

if they are older and doing this there's probably another reason. personally i free ball under board shorts and i agree with the previous statements that they dry faster etc this way. though, ppl certainly get more wet schlong views

Southern California dudes in the 1960s dressed this way. the big thing was to show off boxers, both above and below the boardies. they looked horrible!

Ok, so I hate to bring this back from the dead, but I JUST returned from the beach (there's sand everywhere...), and felt I should comment on what I saw.

Starting off, I saw a few guys just wearing normal khaki shorts on the beach as their swim wear (with underwear under). I also saw a few guys wearing normal running or what have you shorts, and only a few of them with underwear showing.

As far as guys in actual swimwear only a few of them had on underwear underneath their trunks, well... showing at least. I wore just some normal board shorts with my underwear under. Go figure.

I still don't get it. I'm going swimming this weekend and I'm going to be wearing either my swimming trunks, no underwear or tight trunks. I'm sure people will look at me funny but underwear shouldn't be worn with swimming clothes.
