1. Very few snakes are poisonous, poisonous animals are ones that will poison you if you ingest them. Venomous is NOT the same as poisonous. Venom is injected, usually through bites or stings.
2. Singular "they" is NOT a modern phenomenon. This wasn't invented in recent times. The singular usage of the pronoun "they" dates back to at least the fourteenth century, that's not much younger than the plural usage of that pronoun. It is also a good thing that we have a commonly used gender neutral pronoun that can accommodate people who do not identify as either men or women, not all languages have this feature.
