My sons phone broke, he isn't eligible for an upgrade and there was no insurance on it. I got my hands on a new AT&T ZTE Z431 but it's locked. I threw his sim card in there and the screen is saying "Invalid Card". Brief internet research is starting to prove that I can't unlock it without buying something and waiting for it to be delivered, which I can't really afford and don't have time for. Anyone know if there is a way around this?

Agreed. Talk to ATT, first. Have them unlock it for you, since you are current customers.

Alternately, any local independent cell phone shop should be able to do it, too. You're right about it needing equipment, much of the time, but they *have* that equipment.

Finally, you might check for an inexpensive replacement phone. Any ATT phone will work for your son's SIM, including a GoPhone. I picked up a couple of ZTE Android phones, on Black Friday, for under $30 each, new in the box. Sale prices can be amazing.
