I agree with the majority here about the need to use condoms. I used them long before Magnums and Trojan Large were introduced. When I found a brand that was more 'stretchy' than another, I tended to stick with it. I am thicker than normal, so condoms fit snug, but no so uncomfortable that it caused problems. I just got used to the feeling.
If I was going to have sex, the condom was mandatory (birth control), so that was incentive enough for me to use them and get used to them!

Plus, a wrapped willy allows me to enjoy the experience, not worrying if I'm going to catch something or become a dad! B)

Dr Rock ~ Your attitude scares the shit outta me. You have obviously never known or seen someone die from HIV/AIDS. I pray to God that you never do but I hope that you will stop and seriously rethink your actions. Knowledge is the key to success. If you do indeed have that knowledge and refuse to use it then you are only playing Russian Roulette with your own life as well as others.

Kink ~ I'm so glad you brought that quote up. I had actually meant to bring that point up a while back but you did it far better than I could have done. Thank you.

Prep ~ I am so sorry to hear of the girl you know. It just goes to show you that it only takes one time and that is it. I don't see refusing to have unprotected sex as brave. If he was so eager and willing to have unprotected sex with me as a one night stand, I can only assume that he was that way with everyone and I wasn't gonna go near that. I found the only option to giving him a piece of ass was a piece of my mind. Although we all have our own personal ups and downs, I do know that I am worth a lot more than loosing my life to a one night stand that didn't wear a condom.

I still occasionally see that guy from time to time and he still gives me 'the eye' and I am still absolutely revolted by the sight of him. I'm sure if asked, he would deny that it even happened.

sure. I always thought that was the idea behind taking blood tests as often as possible.

okay, I can't pretend I've ever watched anyone DIE from AIDS or a related illness, but I've known plenty of HIV+ people. on the other hand I have watched someone dismembered with a power saw, someone puke out their liquescent respiratory tract after a gas attack, someone bleed to death with all his skin stripped and burned off by a bomb blast ... in my experience, few deaths are exactly pleasant. at least with a terminal illness, you retain the choice to end your own suffering at any time. I certainly ain't going bug-catching, and I'm as careful as I can be in my selection of partners these days, but there's still no way in hell I'm gonna let myself be threatened by a friggin' VIRUS. having already survived cancer and spinal meningitis as a kid, I've had enough of letting diseases dictate to me how I'M gonna live.

Dr Rock,
Your reply saddens me greatly. I sincerely, honestly hope that your will continues to protect you. A $1 condom does the same thing.

I'm with Kink on this one, obviously. I'm sorry that you have indeed witnessed such horrible things but if you can prevent a horrible thing from happening to you, then why not do it. Hell, at least try. I can also see how surviving what you have that it can give you that mentality of invincibility but if you play with fire you will get burned. I wish you no ill will and I hope that you live a long and healthy life but please do your best to insure that it will indeed be just that.

A friend of mine and i recently noticed that all the twentysomethings we know smoke...all of them.
Hardly anyone of the 35 and up crowd (thats us) do.

Same with unprotected sex........the 35 and up crowd practice safe sex on the whole.....at least in our group.
The ones below that age are wildly cavalier about it (as can be seen in some postings here)

Why this change or discrepency?
Perhaps because the HIV poz people they know are all kept alive on meds.
They werent aware in 1986-87 when people that i knew started
dying and in droves.

That was a big scary wakeup call...add to that watching many in my parents generation deal with health problems and death after death from smoking...i wasnt about to get involved in that.
My mother is dead of cancer and my Dad has emphysema

Perhaps seeing all that, at the time that i saw it helped shape my behavior.
Whatever the case, it is undeniable that the "younger crowd" i know engage
in more risky behavior than my crowd did/does.
hmmmmm.

txquis,
and a completely deficient education regarding sex and responsibility, expecially in the 18-24 group. if we don't talk about it, teenagers won't fuck. now the world is perfect. ignore it and the bad stuff will go away.

It is true that you can lead your own life Rock. However, we do not want to see you end up with HIV, and suddenly your life stops being in your own hands. Also, remember that if you transfer the disease on to others before you know you've contracted it, then your personal choice will mean not only the demise of your own life, but for others as well.

Who was it that said "having sex with a condom on is like eating candy with the wrapper on"?

I can't use condoms. Jesus will protect me, I'll run the risk.

Too true, Child. Unless you're sure you both can be 100% faithful, there's no reason to stop using condoms.

Oh, and Herr Doktor? Where'd you get your degree?

I know people are going to do what they want to do, but there are compelling reasons to encourage condom use, especially in a place where much of our membership is so young and may be getting bad advice. I agree that the tendancy toward using condoms is no longer as strong as it once was, and AIDS hasn't gone anywhere. It would be a shame to advocate willful negligence, but if anyone feels that sex is worth dying for, they will do as they see fit.

As usual Jana, you sumed it up perfectly. Condoms have two purposes: To prevent babies and to prevent the transmission of disease.

Some people would rather take a chance on death and have sex the way they want to. Unfortuantley, sooner or later they very likely will die of a sexually transmitted disease. It is a choice.

Exactly! In all honesty, who doesn't know that unprotected sex is an invite to contract an STD? That's like saying that you didn't know that smoking causes lung cancer. Why would you dance with death? Is there a high that you get from it or is it shear carelessness?

actually that's also arguable. so far we only know that smoking increases the likelihood of developing lung cancer; we still don't know what CAUSES it. my grandmother is 104 years old and has been smoking heavily since her early teens, and has never had cancer of any sort. on the other hand her first husband died of lung cancer in his early 40s, and he was by no means as heavy a smoker as she is. I think if smoking actually caused it, she could expect to have it after nearly 90 years.

The 'old smokers' arguement would be more plausible if there were lots of them around! The truth is that they are the exception, not the rule. In my own personal experience, the majority of the very elderly (90+) are skinny and non-smokers.

People who abuse their bodies whether it is food, smoke, alcohol, or whatever, tend not to live as long as those who don't. Here in the US, they no longer say than smoking increases the likelyhood of cancer, they say smoking causes cancer.

Yes, there are exceptions to every 'rule' but I bet your grandmother didn't have a lot of contemporaries (heavy smokers) when she was in her 80's.

Back to safe sex: Practice it! Please! :)

Unless it is a case of rape, both partners have equal resposibility and opportunity to be sure condoms are used. No one can "take you with them" unless you allow it. Don't!

Dr. Rock has clearly decided against sexual responsibility, and we should know by now that nothing we say will budge him one way or the other. Some folks are like that. I really don't understand his rationale, but I guess I shouldn't expect to understand someone who wants to off himself before he turns 25 in order to avoid decrepitude.

Crystal meth ("Tina") is one of the reasons. Guys who are high on Tina have such lowered inhibitions and they don't care whether they're using a condom or not. It's a killer. The HIV virus mutates rapidly and is currently developing resistance to every single one of the 21 anti-viral drugs that we currently have. It takes about 13 years to develop, test and commercialise a new drug. Even if you're already HIV positive, it is still possible to pick up additional strains of the virus.
