Urinal Etiquette

Growing up, my father told me that when a gentleman urinates, he aims for the porcelain, not the water.

Lately, when I have been in men's rooms, men standing at the urinals seeming to be releasing a load, hitting the water, rather loudly. I cannot say that I find their urinal manners rude or impolite, but somehow it seems ungentlemanly.

Maybe I am just being picky or in a bad mood ... Does any one agree with me? Disagree with me? I wiould like to hear your opinion on this rather trivial topic

I aim for the device in the bottom. Sometimes they will have a target for you to hit. Typically this is done to limit splash back. If you’ve ever used a urinal nude you’ll be shocked at how much splashes back onto your skin and feet (wearing sandals).

I agree! Politeness means adjusting your stream to minimize splash-back, regardless of what it sounds like. And that might mean aiming for the water. Scientists have in fact begun to give this problem serious consideration, such as at the SplashLab of Brigham Young University:

The Unfortunate Physics of Male Urination

I can't figure out how to reduce splashback, at least not at work. Our urinals are old and shaped just so that no matter where/how you aim its always hitting at near a 90 degree angle. Often have little splatters of pee all over my work pants!
