What do you guys think of the government shutdown? We're entering the third week of it and it doesn't seem to be close to ending.

When do you think it will end? What do you think the consequences of this shutdown? Personally I think the affects of this shutdown will be very bad and felt for a long time if it doesn't end soon. If it goes into February I will be very worried about the future of the US.

I think it's horrible. Especially those asked to work without pay, I don't know how that's legal.

When do you think it will end? .

When Trump resorts to declaring some kind of national emergency to divert funds that were allocated to the US military to wall construction instead.

What do you think the consequences of this shutdown?.

Government will have a harder time filling vacancies for what are considered essential positions because the pay security is shit. No politician will be held accountable (I think the GOP is clearly responsible. Trump for refusing to sign a bill that doesn't include wall funding, the rest of the GOP for not overriding Trump's veto, but I wasn't going to be voting for these people anyways. Anyone who voted GOP already drank the kool-aid and will blame it on Dems).

I'm wondering if I've misunderstood the situation, because it just looks as if Trump is having an epic spoilt rich kid tantrum until he gets his own way. Yet he's still the president. I just don't get it.

Obviously there won't be any problems with Trump's pay throughout the shutdown. His pay won't be sanctioned (for not doing his fucking job) or delayed. Maybe he plans to end it when the peasants are on their knees and ready to be grateful.

You're not misunderstanding anything.,

He needs to get off the golf course, and go down there and start building the wall himself. And anyone else who is behind his ridiculous wall idea needs to free up some of their spare time and join him. Has he tried crowdfunding?

I actually saw a post online today in which someone in support of the wall was encouraging others to donate to "show the other side what the country really wants." He said he had donated $5, not a huge sacrifice, and so far $16,000,000 had been raised. I don't think that the person understood that even if everyone only donated $1 that it was close to a majority of the population.

Unfortunately, some people don't seem to understand logic, and that's how we got this president in the first place.

The thing is the government is already having trouble filling positions at customs. I have personally handled the entry for personal effects that are being so heavily delayed that the shipments are almost reaching the GO date. This was before the shutdown, mind you. My biggest concern is that this will make the situation even worse. I am genuinely concerned that the CBP might not be able function if this shutdown drives more people out of the CBP.

He donates his pay to charity, he didn’t even want the salary.

The presidents pay is around 400K per year. Even though Trump isn't worth as much as he says, that is not a very significant amount for him. I have no doubt that he takes every penny for himself, though. But not getting paid isn't that much of a deterrent for him.

Most MPs here make their actual money through their business interests rather than their salary too. Politicians use (or abuse) their positions for their own business interests. Are there possibly tax evasion reasons for him donating his salary to charity?

The government has been shut down before without major catastrophies. It’ll probably end with some kind of executive order in the next couple weeks.
The wall was a big promise so trump feels like he’s gotta deliver to his voters. The wall probably wouldn’t be effective, but the left was all for border security before trump took office. Neither side cares about the wall or the money for the wall.. they care about the voters who were promised a wall. Whether the wall is started or not will have a huge impact on the next election

He didn’t want the salary! I remember he wanted to take $1 a year but he was told that he had to get paid, he has been giving it to charity.

We don't really have a reason to believe that he has been giving it to charity, beyond his word. However, if we had his tax returns that could confirm it.

I understood you the first time.
Then I replied to your post.
You either didn't read or understand my reply, then you replied by simply repeating yourself.

Were you aware that this happens in the UK?
No 10: Rich abuse charity giving

I don't know if things work in a similar way in the US, but I wonder if Trump donates to charity for a similar reason.

(don't repeat yourself again)

He lies so much I don't believe it for a single second.

He funnels money he claims is used for "charity" into his own pockets. He's done it for a long time.

In fact the Trump foundation, his charity, was recently shutdown because of allegations that he used it for personal and political gain. He chose to dissolve it before the allegations could go any further, though, that still could come up again. I wonder if that was the charity he was supposedly donating to.

It's a confirmed fact. Look it up.

No, you provide your source for the claim that you are making. It is not my responsibility to provide evidence for a claim that you are making.

Lol. Ok man.

Sorry, but that's the way arguments work. If you want to make a claim you need to be able to back it up. I'm sure you can show me an article in which he said that he was going to donate his salary, but that isn't proof of his actions. But those tax returns would be a start.
