China will not change until it has to.

During the student uprising in Tiananmen Square. China was a cash poor nation there were no rich happy people outside of the government. When they backed down and "respected" human rights they got aid, money, and good will. The spent it well!

There will not be another push for social change they have money now, they give the "loyal" subjects, food, TV, access to outside info (Internet). The motivation is gone, and we are to dependant to take our business elsewhere.

China might as well have there own Internet. They firewall the country, there is a huge list of banned subjects that can't get by. Ask a cicso rep about the special "router needs" of the chinese govt.

The Olympics, should be encouraged to go on for the simple fact the chances improve for some real information of life outside their borders can reach the people. Sports also bring fellowship which can motivate change more then countries making and ultimatium and backing the chinese govt in to a corner and giving them a clear enemy to blame for deteriorating conditions.

I don't think I've writen that much since college.

everything you said is reason enough for not legitimizing the PRC ...

at a time when even the EU is talking of possibly boycotting the games, I find it especially distressing that George Bush has just indicated he will be attending the games

actually, no ... and yes!

given that Pelosi has raised the issue recently, distressing the PRC leadership;

given that the PRC leadership has expressed concern about this possibly becoming an election issue (although to-date, the only candidate to comment has been McCain);

given that there are elements within the PRC that favor a softer treatment whose position would be strengthened;

It should be obvious to the White House, that the momentum of aggregation and synergism with the EU could compel the PRC to change course, possibly with a face-saving compromise, and at the same time undercut any positioning by the democrats,

Unless of course, Beijing is ready to flex its military muscle, which it has been trying to hide for so long, and is longer concerned about its public relations face

At any rate, we may be seeing, as a preview, how Beijing will eventually deal with Taiwan

W's presence does not exactly dignify an event, IMHO. He is nothing but an embarrassment to the country anyway. (maybe they will give him a job when he is retired:biggrin1:)

I favor encouraging dignitaries to use the leverage of boycotting the opening ceremonies, athletes should left to make their own individual
decisions, without pressure.

The 'keep politics out of pure sport' line is bull, the Olympics are at least as much about national one upmanship and commercialism as they are about sport. They are also still homophobic.

How they'd like to, perhaps.

The key difference being that the US is a major arms supplier to Taiwan and (unlike the case of Tibet) has a tangible rather than largely ethical interest in Taiwanese 'independence'. Whether either side (China and US) would want to come to blows over the issue, with the consequences that may entail, is another question of course.

However, as global economic, political and military influences wax and wane it may pan out that way, eventually.

On the Tibet/Olympics issue, it looks like the next few months may being increasingly bad PR on Beijing.
