Did you actually read the article?

Yes, did you ?

"She said the winding down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan allowed the US to refocus on the Asia-Pacific. "After a decade in which we invested immense resources in these two theatres we have reached a pivot point," she said. "We now can redirect some of those investments to opportunities and obligations elsewhere. And Asia stands out as a region where opportunities abound."

Which "resources " and "Investments" do you think she means ?

the most time she is talking about economical why america has to focus on east asia... And just at the end and very short she talkes about military isues...
I would say america absolutly knows that they cant beat china and they will never try...
Americas intrests are trading in asia. And that they send more troops to asia is cause the want to make sure that china doesnt try to blackmail their neighbor cause of their rising military power

So america knows they cant beat them but they also know they can "protect" every country as long as a army of them is in the country...

The people and entities Mrs Clinton is the mouthpiece for have no interest in "taking on" China militarily. Why would they want to rule a billion Chinese, when they can control a very profitable status quo? The idea is preposterous.

That is only your opinion. You cannot possibly know what American military intelligence knows.

Every country in the South Pacific Rim has a beef with China. China's imperialistic attitude that disputed islands have belonged to China for thousands of years doesn't float with countries like Vietnam, The Phillipines, etc. Each of these countries alone is too weak, but together, and reinforced by even an ailing superpower, China would be crushed.

Let's hope, for the sake of your loved ones, those in the Chinese government aren't as a brash as you.

Resources in the economical way. As soon as you dont have to pay for wars any more and people dont need to stay in irap or the industry doesnt has to produze new tanks... THEN you got "free resources" and you can "invest" them new... Like lower tax, the people that come home can be used in the industry and the industry can focus on new produkts insted of tanks...

Why would we attack China? to steal the mountains? The Chinese are wily and conniving in trade but love peace. Of course, a shortage of freshwater or oil resources might be just the catalyst for reversing a 5000 year old trend of isolationism to expansionism.

The question isn't "do they (the US) think they can take China on?".

The question is does China think they are ready to go beyond the uncontested cyber, trade, and economic war that China has waged on the west and bring it out into a full blown conflict with the US over the pacific rim?

The sword cuts both ways.

But to answer the original question, IMHO no the US cannot invade the Asian land mass and succeed, but by the same token regardless of how much property China buys in the US they cannot defeat the US in a global conflict, stolen technology and undervalued currency can only get China so far and it's only a matter of time before the middle class in China expands to the point that it bites them the party in the ass. Nationalistic sentiment can only carry people for so long.

In a few years the Yanks will be behind China, however China has an ageing population which will mean growth will stall in the future. That's mainly due to the one child policy.
And you think India's never-ending growth (20M babies a year) is a good thing?

China has ALWAYS been a trading nation (silk route, tea , opium), it was signing treaties in the 1800s Treaty of Nanking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The past 100 years has been an aberration with communism & incompetence at many levels. But China will rule the coming century.

POI- Chrina never traded Opium, the opium wars were us trying to resist the west selling it in China.

US will shift focus from Middle East to Asia Pacific, Barack Obama declares - Telegraph

China warns Barack Obama over South China Sea 'interference' - Telegraph

Lets just take the South China Sea, Yes its disputed by Asian countries, but one thing is for sure , it doesnt belong to the USA. The oil that lies there(if any) isnt USA oil.
The usa has no right to get involved, its none of the USA's business.
Taiwan has no claim either, as modern Taiwan has only existed since the time General Chiang Kai-shek was finally defeated and ran there, with much of China's wealth.

Its called the south China sea, not the south American sea. We dont need the USA's Navy there any more than ours is needed in the Gulf of Mexico, or the Carrabbian.

Its our region we can sort it out without needing a US military presence.

Lol take a closer look of the last 2000years and you will notice that china never was realy a trading nation. China was always a country of isolation. You chuse opium as an example... Opium was used by the britain to make the chinese drug addikt. So the britains got something the chinese will buy from them. Till that point britain only buy from china but never selled anything...
Google opium war
Or google the result of the only chinese expedition in the 15th century...
It shows that china never was interrested in trading

But, then where did the global Chinese diaspora come from if people weren't moving goods on trade routes between China and other places. Not sure I buy that it was isolated.

China has been trying to lay claim to the vast majority of the South China Sea (so name by Europeans) for a number of years. Base on geography and fair play, their claims are patently ridiculous. Check out this map showing the various claims asserted by the nations bordering the Sea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:South_China_Sea_claims.jpg

Only China's claim is unreasonable. The other nations draw their claim lines at some normal or reasonable distance from their own shores. China claims basically the whole thing.

The Chinese government has been insisting all these conflicting claims should be settled bilaterally between China and the other countries. In other words, they negoiate with Vietnam and settle the claim, then with the Philippines and settle that one and so on. This gives them the ability, due to their size and military and economic power to dictate terms to China's advantage.

Beijing's nose is out of joint because this week Obama raised the issue while all parties were sitting around the table and one by one the leaders of the various nations stood up and said they agreed with the Americans that is would be more fair and more sensible to negotiate it as a group rather than one on one.
