Does using the word "dick" as a derogatory term make sense to you?

If in general penises are wonderful things, why is the word "dick" used to describe a bad person?
Like:
He's a dick.
He was a real dick.
"From wikipedia: a pejorative term for individuals who are considered to be rude, abrasive, inconsiderate, or otherwise contemptible.[1] In this context, it can be used interchangeably with jerk,"

Your thoughts on this important matter? (and don't be a dick)

Even when hurled as an insult, I take it as a compliment or astute observation.

Same with Prick, which I love to be called. Yeah, 'selfish', but the selfish pleasure of dicks, cocks, and pricks is what makes the world go round. I know it's what makes mine work.

I have heard Prick and dick both used that way, and I always think it's fear of saying 'cunt'. Men are often called 'cunts', and that's considered p.c. I call a particularly odious woman 'cunt' when she deserves it, but that's very rare. Certainly not going to call her a 'dick', when she's lacking one. As for the rest like wanker, asshole, that's just daily parlance by now, I say it almost as often as I say 'fuckin' this', 'fuckin that'.

I would never call another man a dick or Prick as an insult, because it is, in fact, a compliment. Usually I'll call one an asshole, although sometimes on the net I call men 'cunts'.

I'm glad somebody thought to bring this up. I notice that even the most non-p.c. types call men dicks and pricks to insult--when it only shows envy.

My neighbor across the street is a dick.

As a descriptive word, it just seems to suit him.

I don't get too tied up with etiology. If the word fits, use it.

I had a neighbor once like that, except it was clear he was un-hung and definitely didn't have Big Dick Energy, in turn just making him a prick.

Because I first heard the word 'dick' in a derogatory manner I don't care my penis to be called a dick. Cock is OK but all the other words like, wang, schlong, noodle etc. just remind me of a couple of pimple pocked pubescent kids out behind the garage talking dirty - or think they're talking dirty.

My thoughts are that you are just thinking too hard about it haha... *pokes your forehead*

Fuck is a word that can mean sooooo many things. Good or bad... dick is the same except not as complex as it can be "just another word for a penis"... or used as an insult.

Words and their usage / new or invented meanings just evolve over time. There really is no explaining it. It doesn't negate the prior versions / methods of use... just adds more.

Dick was / is no more a derogatory word than any other word we think of with the same situational multi-meanings....

Context is all, and everyone interprets things differently

The Marquis de Sade is translated as 'Prick', always capitalized. And all the males featured in such works as Philosophy in the Bedroom and 120 Days of Sodom were not just hung, they were massive.

So we all think of these words differently. On a political forum, there was a poster saying the uncut men had 'cocks' and cut men had 'only dicks'.

Sorry for sloppy non-proofreading. Obviously, I meant Sade's word for the Organ was 'Prick', although I am not sure what French work it's translated from, whether 'bitte', 'queue', etc., but they were always enormous 'Pricks'--some over 13 inches.
