An older friend of mine (age 68) just had a D&C a couple of days ago because of unexplained vaginal spotting. Unfortunately, she's been diagnosed with uterine (endometrial) cancer and will have to have a total hysterectomy in a couple of weeks. I just wish I could do something to help. Does anybody know anything about uterine cancer? What are her odds of beating it? Is this a death sentence for her? What can she expect in terms of treatment, recovery time for a hysterectomy, etc? She is a dear friend and my heart is just breaking for her!

Well I'm still here. Had it 2 years ago. Unexplained spotting post-menopause is usually a first sign of endometrial cancer. Yes a total hysterectomy is the only answer. They will most likely leave in her ovaries or because of her age, she may already be on a hormone therapy treatment plan. I was actually cut open for my hysterectomy due to no children in my past. If she's had children they may do a vaginal hysterectomy. I was in the hospital 3 days, no lifting over 5 pounds for first 2 weeks, took my pain meds as scheduled. Just fully relaxed during that time but generally felt better after 2 weeks. Good luck with your friend. Be there to talk, make tea, wash her hair, things like that.
