Venting About Cancel Culture

Don’t come at me. I’m posting here because it’s a place to vent.

Am I the only one totally fatigued by cancel culture?

Since when is having a different opinion enough to ruin your career or reputation?

I feel like charges of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. are thrown around like weapons. If someone doesn’t like me because I’m not straight, my usual response is “fuck them”. I get on with my life. They get on with theirs. If I want to beat my dick like it owes me money to hot East Asian guys, it doesn’t change their life.

I also feel like every time it’s pointed out regardless of someone’s race or ethnicity t singles them out unfairly and it’s all people focus on. For example, Kamala Harris - I almost entirely disagree with all her political beliefs. I don’t hate her. I disagree. Every article I read is “first black” and “first Asian”. How does that help us? She’s a politician who ran for an office and won it. We are AMERICANS. We are a melting pot. The notion of “representation” to me is being overdone. I DO NOT agree with whitewashing - it pissed me off so bad when I watched Street Fighter Legend of Chun Li and she was played by a white woman. How do you fuck that up?! Or even today, Dr. Rachel Levine was confirmed. She’s transgender. Who cares? She’s a doctor. She’s brilliant by virtue of her background. Make our country better however you can from where you are now that you’re there!

This spills over into every aspect of life now. Diversity is important as long as it comes with ability. I don’t care what someone’s Title IX qualifications are. I care if they can do the task or skill they are employed to perform.

Am I alone? I don’t feel racism etc. is so widely prevalent as it once was and that the woke mob is taking over. All EVERYONE wants is to be respected for who they are. It’s all EVERYONE deserves, too.

When someone is TRULY racist, sexist, or homophobic, etc., throw the fucking book at them, but, don’t accuse people of being something they aren’t simply if they disagree with you.

**Admin Note**

This thread started out in the Safe Space forum, but the topic and responses evolved toward something that would be better suited in Politics. Thusly, it has been assigned a new home over here.

My own vent about "cancel culture" is that media outlets like Fox "news" and others label it as "leftists censoring conservatives" but then you have the same outlets encouraging "cancelling" Lil Nas X.

It's a made-up issue to distract us from actual problems our so called leaders refuse to address. And it works.

All of the recent conservative hand-wringing about cancel culture is laughable. It's because Fox doesn't have enough real issues to work through. More and more, Dems have real things they're trying to do for everyday Americans while Rep's can't think of anything outside gun rights, abortion....and now cancel culture. They INVENTED IT! Anita Bryant with gays? Endless dog-whistles against black culture? Gimme a break.

The term “cancel culture” is just another way of saying that there are consequences to your words and actions. If you’re shown on video using the N word to a store clerk, you’ll probably be losing your job. Sure, you can have your opinion, but the norms of society will not want to stand by you. You post yourself taking part in an insurrection against our Congress, then again, you’ll be prosecuted and will lose your job, rightly so.
Getting riled up about this so called cancel culture is just being fed by a certain strain of media. It’s being a sheep who follows the herd. Use your own brain, each case is different and holding people responsible for their words and actions is just part of living in a civilized society.

I agree to a certain extent.

Racism or any -ism might not be more prevalent now, it's just it's being caught on tape now and coupled with information transmission, you see it them more often.

Also, don't you think there needs to be consequences? It's really not "cancel" per say but consequences.

I feel like the only ones really worked up about cancel culture are those most likely to be subject to it. Its fair game to call out and be reactionary to shittiness, and it seems people that arent used to social consequences for their actions and words are getting a small taste of what existence for the disenfranchised has been by default.

The ones who always participate in cancelling others are always leftists, cultural Marxists, and socialists. This has always been the history. And what they don't realize is the ones who pull the puppet strings are the ones who plant these ideas in the people who are so easily susceptible to radical left wing ideas. The joke will be on them because eventually the ones who cancel others now will be the ones getting cancelled in the future. They are what's called historically the "useful idiots".

It’s not a left or right thing. The left is worse about it than the right, but it’s usually the religious right and not average right-leaning people. The religious right are as hypocritical as the lefties.

No there's a difference. The religious right don't "cancel" a person. They shame a person. They don't cancel them or doxx them. These are all things of the left. Back in the 80s when Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority had their heyday you never heard the term cancel culture. This coincides with the increase of the socialist incursion within the Democrat party and left leaning parties through the Western world.

Again I will point everyone here to the term "useful idiot" in case they don't know what that means historically.

Ask Galileo.

Censoring works because of either their content or the reputation of the creator has gone on a long time.

Think of Banned in Boston, the Comstock act, the movie rating systems, even Tipper Gore and her lyric label.
Lenny Bruce might have had a lot to say.

it’s society working out it’s latest issues.

I lean to “I’m not supporting, but you do you.”
No G-d chicken, no Ted Nugent, no hatecore bands or alumni allowed in my personal world.

I like what Mona Charen who is policy editor to the right-wing newspaper The Bulwark recently wrote.
“ Honestly, I think we should probably retire the phrase ‘cancel culture’ at this point, because it’s losing its meaning when people use it to mean, ‘ I resent your drawing attention to my crazy ideas’, she said”.

I think that Sinead O'Connor really goes overlooked as the first person to really be canceled like this. And that was for of pissing off the Catholic Church, tearing up that pic of the pope on SNL.

There were tons of people before that who got away with all sorts of things (sort of).

Roman Polanski
Jerry Lee Lewis
Woody Allen

All men... go figure.

They shouldn’t get away with anything. But the answer isn’t a double standard or an extreme swing in the opposite direction. It’s equal treatment. I think we have made significant progress in the last 60+ years.

Agreed. The radical right has no problem censoring everything under the sun in the name of the bible (music, TV shows, artwork). Remember Murphy Brown? Remember the republican response to a single mom on tv? Now all of a sudden they are so bothered by "cancel culture", It's all political BS to shade you from the reality that they are systematically destroying this country in every way possible. You focus on the stupid stuff and they dismantle and marginalize.
