Actually... many health insurance plans DO cover a PORTION of the cost of viagra. That is, if it is prescribed for ED, then its considered no different than any other prescription... and covered, or price-reduced, based upon your overall policy for medications ( some health plans cover medications differently, some, not at all )
On the other hand, used to be that Few policies covered birth control... not for women Nor for men...27 states, however, did require health insurance to cover birth control.
As to the OPs opinion of them being in the same category... they aren't.
Viagra and cialis are for diagnosable DYSFUNCTIONS. i.e. something in your body NOT working as it is supposed to.
Birth Control is NOT prescribed to treat any dysfunction... women are perfectly capable of having sex without hormonal birth control, and, in fact, are perfectly capable of preventing birth by several means OTHER than hormonal north control.... so your notion that the two medications serve the same function is simply nonsense.
Now... Obamacare got pilloried for including in its law the requirement that health insurance companies include coverage for birth control pills or other prescribed birth control for women...
and a bunch of right wing religious authoritarians complained that that was against their religion, despite the fact that MOST of those complaining already lived in States that mandate that very coverage.
And, in the last analysis, the notion that this means Viagra or Birth control would be "FREE" or paid for by the government is stupidity of the worst kind.
Most women of child bearing age PAYING FOR HEALTH INSURANCE are NOT ill. This means that they are paying several thousand dollars to insurance companies, and pretty much receiving little to No services in return.
a $30 co-pay for check-ups doesn't begin to balance the YEARS of premiums that healthy people pay into insurance companies in their 20s and 30s with nary a hospital stay or serious illness.
The idea is that, out of those hundreds of millions of dollars being raked in by companies grabbing 30% profit margins... the government is going to demand that SOME of that money be spent in the form of services to the customers forking over the cash.
And one common expense that insurance companies could easily afford and which, requiring a prescription, OUGHT to covered by health insurance premiums, is birth control pills.
NO ONE GETS HEALTH CARE FOR FREE. If you get it thru your job... either you pay part of it... all of it... or its a benefit that the company offers as compensation for your LABOR...
that is, its part of YOUR SALARY.
And so when folks say the Government is trying to give away free birth control, tell them to Shut Their Ignorant Yaps until they fucking know what they are talking about.
If not for conservatives, and stupid ass Americans voting for them, we might have had a single payer healthcare system.... which would have dropped the cost of healthcare by 30% Immediately.
