So does anyone else feel the same way?

Viagra and like pills are NOT covered by insurance companies yet birth control for woman is... Kind of seems discriminatory, men can't get the needed meds for a healthy sex life yet women can, I understand they do different things but really haven't he same purpose in a way.....

My birth control Is NOT covered by my health insurance. I've had three different insurances and none of them covered it. I think that it really depends more on your perscription coverage than descriminating on which sex deserves the drug more. I will say that they do two very different things and aren't on the same playing field only that they are related to genetalia/repro systems. One causes blood to rush to the penis to create an erection and one causes females to not ovulate to reproduce.

New plans are now generally mandated to provide free contraception.

Birth control prevents an unwanted pregnancy, among of other things. Only women can become pregnant or develop conditions that birth control pills can treat. Viagra has nothing to do with pregnancy. It also doesn't "treat" any disorder. ED is a manifestation of other diseases associated with aging. Entirely different drugs.

I'm a woman who had to use birth control to regulate my hormone levels so I'd have a period. It's not just for a healthy SEX life for MANY women who are prescribed to Birth Control. I'll need to regulate my hormones for the rest of my life, and it's got nothing to do with sex.

The bottom line is money. Birth control prevents insurance companies from having babies added to it's roles. Viagra and other ED drugs enable you to add babies to the insurance roles. Simple math. Unfair but so is life.

Actually... many health insurance plans DO cover a PORTION of the cost of viagra. That is, if it is prescribed for ED, then its considered no different than any other prescription... and covered, or price-reduced, based upon your overall policy for medications ( some health plans cover medications differently, some, not at all )

On the other hand, used to be that Few policies covered birth control... not for women Nor for men...27 states, however, did require health insurance to cover birth control.

As to the OPs opinion of them being in the same category... they aren't.

Viagra and cialis are for diagnosable DYSFUNCTIONS. i.e. something in your body NOT working as it is supposed to.

Birth Control is NOT prescribed to treat any dysfunction... women are perfectly capable of having sex without hormonal birth control, and, in fact, are perfectly capable of preventing birth by several means OTHER than hormonal north control.... so your notion that the two medications serve the same function is simply nonsense.

Now... Obamacare got pilloried for including in its law the requirement that health insurance companies include coverage for birth control pills or other prescribed birth control for women...
and a bunch of right wing religious authoritarians complained that that was against their religion, despite the fact that MOST of those complaining already lived in States that mandate that very coverage.

And, in the last analysis, the notion that this means Viagra or Birth control would be "FREE" or paid for by the government is stupidity of the worst kind.

Most women of child bearing age PAYING FOR HEALTH INSURANCE are NOT ill. This means that they are paying several thousand dollars to insurance companies, and pretty much receiving little to No services in return.
a $30 co-pay for check-ups doesn't begin to balance the YEARS of premiums that healthy people pay into insurance companies in their 20s and 30s with nary a hospital stay or serious illness.

The idea is that, out of those hundreds of millions of dollars being raked in by companies grabbing 30% profit margins... the government is going to demand that SOME of that money be spent in the form of services to the customers forking over the cash.

And one common expense that insurance companies could easily afford and which, requiring a prescription, OUGHT to covered by health insurance premiums, is birth control pills.

NO ONE GETS HEALTH CARE FOR FREE. If you get it thru your job... either you pay part of it... all of it... or its a benefit that the company offers as compensation for your LABOR...

that is, its part of YOUR SALARY.

And so when folks say the Government is trying to give away free birth control, tell them to Shut Their Ignorant Yaps until they fucking know what they are talking about.

If not for conservatives, and stupid ass Americans voting for them, we might have had a single payer healthcare system.... which would have dropped the cost of healthcare by 30% Immediately.

In the end we are as Phil says going to end up with single pay health insurance no matter what anyone says. It is coming and it will be here eventually as more and more experience the gouging and completely one sided policies of the various major insurance carriers. I have friends in Canada, I have friends in the UK, I have friends in France, and I have friends in Australia. Compared to what we have and to what I and my direct family have experienced, we have crap, they have the gold crown. I am dealing with cancer in my 25-year-old Son. We had one surgical procedure and then in January a re-appearance of the cancer in the same location. The insurance company screwed up the first set of bills for the 2010 original surgery forwarding bills to Blue Cross of Texas when we don't live in Texas, and they have trimmed the bills to the health care providers for the second in January of 2013. The idea is to have the MD's refuse to treat the patients simply because they cannot make any money. The surgeon this time received less than $400 for a 4-hour tumor removal including speciality work to preserve my Son's speech. In spite of the universal inclusions under what is mislabeled as "Obamacare" insurance companies are refusing to carry him when he turns 26 in July of this year. The few that will take him want $1,200 - $1,600 per month for a policy with a $25,000 cap. Their response is "well, when the time comes, sue us" we don't care.

Some insurance policies do pay for birth control and some do pay for ED medications. In fact the incredibly stupid part is that most insurance carriers will pay for a $15,000 surgical procedure for the installation of a penile implant and then they will pay it again if the implant fails in ten years. At the same time, they sit and argue over a pill that could remove some of those surgical expenses from their policy pay-outs or delay them to the point that sex and requiring that pill wouldn't be in the picture anyway.
