To be clear—I think Trump should experience all legal consequences for his actions, including jail time.

But on a practical note, what will be his base’s possible reactions, and are we prepared for them?

That’s what I’m asking.

NCbear (who’s sure Trump can fit into a jail cell, no matter how fat his ass gets)

I think we should be prepared for both.

The rest of us must not let them get away with it!!!

Exactly. Letting Trump & Co. get away with all that they've done will only secure in their minds the notion that they CAN get away with it... again and again.

MEANWHILE:

The family of Floyd Ray Roseberry, the far-right ‘patriot’ who took downtown Washington hostage with threats of a bomb in his pickup truck, is reportedly saying he has a history of mental problems. Maybe so. Problem being, the same MIGHT very well be said of a number of right winged extremists and those of similar ilk, in and out of office, possibly starting with Donald Trump himself, if Mary Trump's revelations are to be believed.

There have already been several studies and op-eds on the subject, from an analysis of the capitol rioters, to a new study published in the Journal of Social Psychology, in which researchers found that narcissism via anti immigrant sentiment and ideological beliefs, based upon right wing authoritarianism and a desire for social dominance, was related to support for Trump. (surprise surprise)

So, judging from what WE'VE been seeing and hearing, I think it would be correct to conclude that what we are dealing with in the present day GOP is a cult-like following that has CLEARLY fallen under sway of some rather odious and dangerous SENTIMENT - that's spreading like an infectious "sickness" of the mind among all those susceptible - a temperament feeding and building upon itself.

Not omitting the fact that their elected representatives and relied upon news sources also continuously stoke the flames of their mass psychosis.

Like when an elected representative such as M. T. Greene goes off on a profane rant against the President, forgetting, apparently, that she's a member of Congress, and not just an ordinary citizen exercising her freedom of speech.

Or when another member of Congress, GOP Rep. Mo Brooks, openly expressed sympathy with yet ANOTHER act of terrorism by saying how "He Totally Gets 'Anger' Over 'Socialism.'

Anger expressed via written grievance, petition, boycott, votes, peaceful protests, lawful assembly? Yeah. Showing up in D.C. claiming to have a truck load of explosives, and threatening to blow stuff up? I think not.

The FACT is, there is PLENTY of late, coming from within the ranks of the right that smack of mentalities and rhetoric of an extreme and dangerously psychopathic nature. Like for instance the Proud Boys' increasing involvement in local affairs and now, reportedly, the anti-vaxxer movement, for the purpose of deliberately instigating, agitating and stirring up violent confrontations.

Or the Michigan man who started a petition for the recall of "militia-linked" Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf, but who later withdrew the petition because he was inundated with death threats against himself and his family.

Perhaps not TOO coincidentally, Sherriff Leaf, if you recall, was the Michigan sheriff who shared a stage with the arrested militant terrorists who plotted to kidnap Michigan governor Whitmer, blow up a bridge, etc. etc. - yet Leaf defended THEIR right to "arrest" her.

If THAT'S not sick I don't know what is.

According to a Rawstory report last week Homeland Security warned of a potential act of domestic violence six days before Trump supporter and far right... guy... Floyd Ray Roseberry, threatened to bomb D.C. in an act of terrorism. So one can't HELP but wonder what kind of chatter might have prompted their concern.

Though, frankly, violent chatter from far right extremists have become more the RULE than the exception:

A Trump fundraising email compares American teachers to the Taliban
WATCH: Marjorie Taylor Greene fan says Taliban win could be used as model for 'patriots' to take over US

Meanwhile there was a clash between Trump's instigators (Proud Boys) and counter demonstrators in Portland. Aired video showed them assaulting people and wrecking vehicles they believed belonged to anti fascists. Trump's proud boys were there, of course, to rally for the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrectionists.

In related news, the AP called on DeSantis to stop his press secretary (who Twitter also suspended for abusive behavior) from harassing journalists. While Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts told Marjorie Taylor Greene to, "Stay the hell out of Fulton County." And in Spring Creek Ranch, Wyoming, Patagonia (makers of outdoor clothing and gear) said, "Neigh" to a ski resort there, by pulling their sh.... their MERCHANDISE... OUT, after the owner hosted a GOP fundraiser with Greene.

On Tuesday, a recent USA TODAY report revealed that armed protests were on the increase, with the number of such protests doubling between February and June. While a May report by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism reportedly found that a recent series of violent incidents have been linked to followers/believers of QAnon, with some experts speculating on the possibility of mental health being a factor.

On Monday, CNN's Donie O'Sullivan spoke to one such Trump supporter, Stephen Palmer, who firmly believes in the Trump "reinstatement" and even further threatened a Taliban-style takeover if it didn't happen, reportedly saying,

"There’s millions of guns here. You know, it took 11 days for them to take over Afghanistan. Wonder how many days — just asking for a friend — how many days it would take the patriots to take over this country. Think about it."

After O'Sullivan asked Palmer if he wanted that to happen he responded,

“I don’t want it to happen, but if our country, our government, our Congress and Biden don’t get their heads out of their butt, it’s going to happen. I assure you. It’s coming.”
