*sigh* Apparently reading comprehension isn't your friend.

 Yeah sure. Say whatever you want. The fact is that they were already thinking about this since they were already against abortion. They were just simply too scared to go through with it.

I just find it insulting because it's implying that I'm not intelligent enough to make an informed decision without being directed in a certain direction. I hope they all end up losing their jobs.

^^ Perfect timing??? They've had the opportunity for EIGHT years to make abortion illegal in every state and they didn't do it. My point is that if they really wanted this done, they would've done the eight years they were in control.

they cant, the supreme court already ruled on it.

they will never be able to outlaw abortion, they would need the supreme court to overturn roe v wade, or a constitutional amendment.

^^ I know that. What I was saying was that they had the chance to try and really do something about it and they didn't which is why I'm not really concerned about the bill in VA anymore.

It's my understanding they've stepped this one back, at least a bit, after apparently getting a shitstorm of feedback.

Still, I am amazed that something like this could even be contemplated in some asshole politician's mind, in 2012. Virginia increasingly makes me ill.

I can see how the ultrasound would be helpful for informed consent (I'm sure some dumb dumbs don't know it is alive from conception) but making it a state law is certainly over-reach.

Heartbeat does not equal viability.

this law is about forcing an unessecary medical procedure in the hopes of manipulating an emotional responce. enformed consent is so not the intent of this bit of anti-choice legeslation.

is also an insult to every woman walking through the clinic doors. implying she reached her choice lightly, or without knowledge or forethought.

Yes, I get that. However, the fact remains it is termination of life, and there are, in fact, women who do not have full knowledge about what is going on. I get that it is total conservative bullshit legislation, but the procedure itself should be used as a method to help some people make a decision. Consider the 14 or 15 yo couple who got pregnant. How much knowledge and forethought do you think they have?

How many 14 or 15 year old couples do you think are actually ready for a baby; emotionally or financially? The fact is that for most pregnant teenagers, an abortion is the better option.

And you say it is a fact that abortion is "termination of a life" but what you mean is it is termination of a potential life.

If people say terminating potential lives is wrong I usually reply I'm a mass murderer
But in reality abortion is more of a caes-by-case thing where the decision for everyone depends on things like income, family, etc.

I don't think any of us are qualified to determine when "life" actually begins. Its such a gray area. I don't see this as such a bad thing. How does it hurt anyone? I think its a good idea in that it ensures that women make an informed decision. If you are afraid the ultrasound will change your mind, maybe you were not making the right choice in the first place. Nobody is losing the right to choose.

Well, it is making someone pay for an unnecessary procedure out of pocket, and it is a fundamental violation of someone's privacy and their body. So there's that. But if none of that bothers you, why don't you go get your testicles and prostate examined by a doctor before you make a decision to end a potential life by wearing a condom during sex, I mean it's no big deal right?

Speaking to your point, Athos, is this part of the bill which almost made it in:
Earlier this month, Democratic Oklahoma Sen. Constance Johnson added – then withdrew – a provision to an anti-abortion bill that read "any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a woman's vagina shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child." The state Senate passed the bill this month.

I mean, this is where Bill Maher is absolutely correct: Republicans apparently really do think life begins at erection. And then there's this, which I think is hysterical given that you know it was done as symbolic protest and that it only failed by two votes:

In January, as the Virginia state Senate debated a bill that required women to have an ultrasound before an abortion, Democrat Janet Howell attached an amendment that required men to have rectal exams and cardiac stress tests before they could receive prescriptions for erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra. The amendment was rejected in the Senate, 21-19.
