Refusing to shop at Wal-Mart wouldn't be the right thing to do. This is one individual's action. It has nothing to do with Wal-Mart as an entity.
An interesting book says America has always had to have a "devil" to obsess over. He traces this phenomenon from the Salem witch trials through the years to Communism in the 50's and 60's and on down to the present day.
I have also noticed that lately we need to have an evil corporation. Right now it's Wal-Mart that everyone loves to hate. Before that it was Microsoft that was on the verge on world domination and everyone was having a hissy. Before that it was Exxon. Ok, Exxon really is evil but I digress. Otherwise rationale people have a mental block about Wal-Mart for some reason. Some of them are insecure and worry that shopping there will harm their social status. People like that deserve to be insecure. I know a guy who is out of work and having a hard time paying his mortgage. However he is still on his high horse about not shopping at Wal-Mart so he shops at a competitor and pays 3 times as much for some items. Idiot.
I shop at Wal-Mart but can't stand crowds so I go there early on a Sat or Sun morning and just zoon right through with barely anyone else there and when I leave I laugh all the way to the bank.
Many of the Wal-Marts are being remodeled. The recession has caused a demographic shift -- the average income levels have increased as people become more cautious with their money and start shopping there instead of other places. WM wants to keep them after the recession is over so they have put a lot of money into improving the look of the store inside. Wider aisles, better lighting, more attractive displays, etc. They recently finished the one nearest me and it's much nicer now.
