I'm interested in how people see the next four years if their candidate wins the Presidency. Specifically, where will we be as a nation in four years, and how exactly do we get there. I have zero interest in hearing where we'll be if the candidate you oppose wins, so let's try and keep it on the positive side. Be specific as possible as to what legislation or policies your candidate espouses that will get us to where you think we should be.

Well, let's see, in four years I would like....

equal citizenship for all
better educational systems
healthier environment
better foreign relations
less national debt due to decreased healthcare costs
pulling together to take care of our elderly, disabled and disenfranchised
ending wars in middle east
investing in alternative energy

hmmmm...who should I vote for?

Less dependence on oil, not just domestic, take away the Big Oil subsidies.
Take away the corporate subsidies that sent jobs overseas, and fine them millions of dollars a day, for every day they don't bring back jobs to the U.S.
allow more solar companies to thrive. give incentives to older and new car companies that produce electric cars.
Hydrogen cars technology has been in place since 1967, advance that technology going forward.
Support EPA (started by Nixon) for greater pollution standards.
Get Government out of the business of dictating what a woman can do with her bodies, and let Rowe vs Wade stand.
We need to get out of countries where are troops are in harms way, no more wars.
Ratify gay marriage in all states, with a federal mandate. Includes the ERA amendment.
Reaffirm separation between church and state, Religion needs to leave politics entirely.
Support Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid, add more money.
Reduce National elections to 6 weeks... then vote.
Give more teeth to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Emphasize how states cannot restrict voters to laws that keep them away from the polls. Voter equality. Voting is a RIGHT not a privilege.
Legislatively repeal Citizen's United, get rid of political Pacs entirely. Make them illegal.
Make Wall Street repay all the TARP $ they accepted, and gave out as bonus's to CEOs.
Make millionaires/billionaires pay their fair share of taxes, to the level when Truman was President.
Increase middle class taxes by 5%, but not higher than that.

There is no candidate that I'm aware of that plans to do all of this.

Probably not much will happen. Its been the gop plan to let obama win both elections so they can continue to sabotage our economy and say after 8 years, "see what happens when you trust a dark skinned man?"

The real change will come only when people realize the gop obstructed democracy for the last 16 years, and the country decides to elects a dem again in '16.

On the flip side, tamati, if the two silver-spooned white guys get elected and GOP takes the executive branch again with the right-leaning congress...they just might destroy the country enough to finally wake enough people up to end the Republican's dependence on the right-wing voter.

A very good point. However I don't think I want to risk putting them back into power, since we know exactly what they'll do in power is exactly what Bushed did, only on steroids. Can't you see, that the Repugnant-Cons are even further to the RIGHT than even Bushed??? The current flock of Tea-Partiers, are extremely so far Right, that they're almost out of the box entirely? Do you think normal Republican voters, see eye to eye with the Extreme Right Wing?? I don't think that the normal thinking Republican wants to vote for these radicals that, they make Ronald Reagan look like a leftist.

It doesn't matter so much who wins the presidency. It matters where the congress stands after the election.

If the house goes back to the democrats... Nancy Pelosi proved she was very effective at getting legislation passed.

If the Senate stays democratic, and especially if it goes back to being a democratic supermajority... then Obamas second term will see more aggressive action on economic stimulus, and the country will begin to recover somewhat from a very bad disaster.

However, unless Obama and a democratic majority use their power to enact much stronger regulation on banking, finance and corporate political spending, I fear that we will simply have another economic disaster waiting for the next GOP administration to take their eye off the regulatory ball.

If Obama wins, and the House stays republican, and senate stays a simple democrat majority, then we will get more GOP obstructionism of economic recovery as their ploy to regain power.

And if Obama takes the white house, but the GOP gets both houses of congress... Obama will be very busy exercising veto power over a GOP agenda of regressive tax polices, expanding military spending, further erosion of the middle class, and further underfunding of government, for the purpose of making government incapable of functioning, so that folks will blame the democrats because of Obama being president.

Long term...
I think if democrats win Up and Down ticket... then the result will be the GOP moderates seizing back control of their party and shoving the extremists to one side.
I think a big democratic win would force the GOP to re-examine their platform and perhaps abandon the White Elderly fear faction as no linger being a viable path to office.

I think the best hope for a truly bipartisan and effective congress in future decades would be massive GOP losses NOW. Simply because that would drive the GOP bacl toward a party that was willing to get things done even if it meant having to compromise with the left.

I agree, this election isn't just about the Presidency, It's about getting Congress back to a functional role, and stop the filibustering, and grand-standing. We need a balanced Congress, one that can address the Nation's needs. This current Congress, hasn't gotten anything done with they got into office in 2010. Time to boot them out, and get an effective Congress back in. All politics are local.

I nearly voted gop in 08, just cause I wanted the gop to face up to dubyas blunders... But I wanted to be able to sleep at night.

I think a big democratic win would force the GOP to re-examine their platform and perhaps abandon the White Elderly fear faction as no linger being a viable path to office.

Especially since so many of them are now former pot-smoking, free-love hippies. The AARP is still the biggest voting block, and they are getting more blue each day. The GOP is going to need a huge overhaul in their campaign model.

I think the best hope for a truly bipartisan and effective congress in future decades would be massive GOP losses NOW. Simply because that would drive the GOP bacl toward a party that was willing to get things done even if it meant having to compromise with the left.

They were a wreck in 2008. Their leader left with a 22% approval rating. That was their golden moment to split into a fiscally conservative party and a socially conservative party. Instead, they remain a party divided and they have to continually try to make sense of their policies, congressional voting and discourse (depending on the audience). The dyke has too many holes for this to be sustainable. As a result, they'll continue to stoop and use ad hominems rather than focusing on their policies; they'll cater to big business and fundamentalists; and they'll have to keep lying to fill in those inconsistent policies.

I think the next 4 years will be very difficult for the country. Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid costs will continue to increase. So many baby boomers will retire and start using these programs. There are far fewer workers to pay taxes into the system. There is no way these programs can continue as they do now.

The military must cut back on its operations. The USA should not be an empire with military bases and troops around the world. This is very costly. The USA should not be involved in the politics of so many other countries.

Gas prices will remain high and will continue to increase. This will place a strain on all economies especially the USA since we are so car dependent. The economy will not be able to grow and unemployment will increase.

The next president must be brave enough to cut the 4 major spending programs : Military, Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid.
