Knowing how I would feel upon losing my purse, I always endeavour to locate the owner of any wallets/purses I discover. It's not all about the money, is it? I keep stuff in my purse that I'd be pretty torn up about losing, so that kinda guides my response.
Random notes/coins are an entirely different matter - thats called a 'bonus'!!!!!

I would always return it intact, I'd even go out of my way to try to find the owner of it to let them know. Same with cellphones, day planners, whatever. My wallet fell out of my jacket once and I didn't find out until later, and I went back to the place I most likely lost it, and was looking around, when someone said to me: "You look like someone who's lost their wallet."

Now my EX.... he found 2 wallets, and kept the cash both times and mailed them back to the owner. I was reallllllly pissed at him.

And as far as loose notes..... I look around, and if nobody is runnng up to that area with a look  of on their face, then I stake my claim. :biggrin1:

We were driving along the freeway once, having a coversation, when I stopped midsentence and without skipping a beat...."blah blah blah and is that money blowing across the freeway?!" My friend pulled over about a hundred feet ahead (we were already in the rightmost lane), and I thought it would be pointless, but the wind from the traffic swept them all right to me, and 10 seconds later, we had 140 bucks. :veryhappy:

Not that pulling over on the freeway is something I would recommend to anyone.

I've never found a wallet but I find charge cards and cell phones all the time. I've got it down to a fine science.

For the cards I notify the company to contact the cardholder to come pick it up.

For the phones I dial numbers from the recent calls list and ask the person on the other end if they recognize the number. If they can identify the number I'll ask them to contact the phone owner though a land line and direct them to contact me to retrieve their phone. Failing that I'll get the isdn # off the back and contact the issuing company.

I've found all kinds of wallets, purses, jackets, personal possessions. IF there is identification, then I make an effort to contact the person directly, and make arrangements for return. If I can't directly return it, I make arrangements for them to pick it up at a safe place, like a police station, a bank, etc. I have never thought of keeping any money or personal possessions of someone else, and I only check the items for identification and go no further into the item. If all else fails, I find a lost and found or a cop, and turn it into them. It doesn't belong to me, why would I keep it? I won't say I haven't picked up and kept a loose bill or quarter off the street. I'm not perfect.

Without ID, I'd probably keep the money and ditch the wallet. With ID, I'd steal their identity.

:biggrin1:

Just kidding. With ID, I'd try to get it back to the owner. If, however, there was no ID to be found, and I took the money, I wouldn't feel bad about taking it.

When I was in Kyoto, I left my Casio Exilim camera on the backseat of a taxi I had taken. I realized it about 5 minutes after I had gotten out, and of course the taxi was long gone.

I called the police department a few hours later and they said I'd have to go down to see if they had it, so I did.

They had it and gave it back to me. It was about four hours later. I thought it was all pretty impressive, because if I had left it in a taxi here, I'd expect it to be long gone.

I lost $800.00 out of my wallet when I paid for groceries at a local store. Several hours later I realized that my wallet was thinner than it was, I called the store and they said one of their male clerks had found it, he gave it to management who kept it for 2 hours and then they turned it over to the police. I went to the police station and was able to give them sufficient evidence of why I had that kind of money, daily receipt register and description, 7 or 8 100's and 2 50's and they released it to me. I donated 5% to the police Xmas fund for kids and then I went to the store where I gave the teenage male clerk 10% which he tried to refuse.

I was fortunate.

If its a wallet, I would definitely return to the appropiate authorities, loose money on the ground, however, then all bets are off, If I find one while im walking, lying there on the ground, then I will keep that.

Although I would have a few moments perhaps of wanting to keep the wallet or its contents I would return it After all it does not belong to me and even if there is large amounts of cash in it I do not know how much the owner of it might need and it belongs to them any way either through hard work, dishonest work or theft. No matter what it is not mine so back to the owner it has to go.

I'm pretty sure I would return any wallet I might find, if it had ID.
I've lost my wallet twice ... and one time got the wallet back with the ID and money in it, and the other time just got the wallet and ID without any money.
However, in that latter case, the person who found it called me and said they'd found it some place I hadn't been walking ... fair proof that someone else had found the wallet first, taken out the money, and tossed it.
The second (honest) person found the wallet (now without money) and did what I hope I would do ... return a wallet exactly as I found it.
