Messed up..reading the NYT, WP, etc..the ubiquitous phrase, "officials who spoke on condition of anonymity .." So they are quoting anonymously; and depends on how you define "Official"; official what?, Officially Anonymous?, c'mon..
case in point..in the following link

U.S. weighs special forces in Syria, helicopters in Iraq

You read such passages as, "..President Barack Obama, deeply averse to over-committing American troops to unpopular wars in the Middle East,"...To me this is "good propaganda"; since it's a half- truth, The most powerful form of lie is the omission…” — George Orwell

Inside Story - Why has US reneged on vow to keep troops out of Syria?

Published on Oct 31, 2015
One of the central commitments of Barack Obama's presidency has been keeping US troops out of wars in the Middle East. But that commitment seems, once again, to be in doubt after the US decided to commit special forces to Syria, in what the White House says will be an advisory role.US officials have been left trying to explain how the deployment does not undermine Obama's earlier promises not to "put boots on the ground".The announcement also threatened to undermine talks being held in Vienna on how to end the war in Syria.Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the move was decided "unilaterally and without reference to the Syrian leadership". He added that "neither the United States nor Russia want the conflict to become a so-called proxy war".So, is deepening US and Russian involvement making a resolution to the civil war even more difficult?Presenter: Jane DuttonGuests:Mario Abou Zeid - Research analyst at the Carnegie Middle East Center.David Mack - Scholar from the Middle East InstituteVladimir Sotnikov - International affairs expert at Russia Academy of Sciences

Russian, Israeli jets share Syrian skies ... for now

Israel and Russia are acting like two lions on the African savanna. One, the younger one, rules the territory. He is used to walking around freely and doing almost anything he pleases without disturbance. Suddenly another lion appears on the scene, more mature, stronger, far more powerful. The two lions warily eye one another. Neither wants to get involved in a squabble that might inflict harm. The territory is large enough for them both, and their interests are not necessarily incompatible. They decide on a “cold peace” kind of coexistence involving a certain amount of coordination in the joint territory. What we see now is how these two lions circle each other, checking out the other’s alertness and vigilance, sniffing, setting out boundaries, checking each other’s responses, trying to determine the rules of the game.

REAKING NEWS

The terrorists in the Paris attacks communicated with ISIS members in Syria, French and U.S. officials said

Sunday, November 15, 2015 1:34 PM EST
The attackers in Friday’s terrorist assault in Paris communicated at some point beforehand with known members of the Islamic State in Syria, officials on both sides of the Atlantic say, adding evidence to the assertions that the radical group coordinated or helped carry out the attacks rather than simply inspiring them.
While the information made available so far about the links between the Islamic State and the Paris attackers was not definitive, it suggested at a minimum that the assailants had not acted totally on their own.

6 state governors oppose Syrian refugee relocation

Multiple Republican governors on Monday opposed relocation of Syrian refugees within their states in the wake of deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last week.

In the past two days, governors of six states — Texas, Michigan, Louisiana, Indiana, Arkansas and Alabama — criticized admittance of migrants, citing security concerns. The United States plans to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next year amid ongoing conflict in the country.

Statements by the governors came as Obama addressed the G-20 meeting in Turkey. He called suggestions from political leaders that a religious test be applied to refugees seeking asylum in the U.S., "shameful."

"That's not American," he said. "That's not who we are. We do not have religious tests to our compassion."

No reason given other than "concerns" about security, i.e. they have no rationale for their xenophobia.
