How Biden annoyed Ankara during his recent visit to Turkey

The high-profile visit by US Vice President Joe Biden to Turkey last weekend produced little satisfaction and much annoyance in Ankara, especially with regard to Washington’s position on the state of democracy in Turkey and on certain developments in Syria.

Summary⎙ Print Was the US vice president's awkward talks with the Turkish president and prime minister a harbinger of even more tension in already strained ties between the two countries?
Author Semih IdizPosted January 26, 2016
Many analysts see Biden’s awkward talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as a harbinger of tense moments to come in what are already strained ties between the two countries. Few, however, expect a break in ties because neither can afford that.

Ankara expected criticism from Biden with regard to what independent human rights organizations and media watchdog groups say is the hounding of journalists critical of the government’s policies and academics opposed to its current war against the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The government’s irritation, however, intensified when Biden met members of civil society groups and prominent journalists known to be in the government’s crosshairs, expressing solidarity with them ahead of talks with Erdogan and Davutoglu.

Is there any hope for the Syria talks?

Published on Jan 30, 2016
For more than a month, the United Nations has been preparing for talks aimed at ending the civil war in Syria.Opposition groups held multiple meetings in Riyadh to decide who would attend the talks. And the international community repeatedly debated the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, all in anticipation of negotiations that were scheduled to begin in January. Those talks were delayed once but have now begun. But without main members of the opposition. They're demanding that some prisoners be released, and calling for an end to air strikes and sieges. If these conditions aren't met, the opposition members say, they won't be joining the talks in Geneva.Representatives of the Syrian government are there, as are some lesser known members of the opposition and civil society. They're meeting with UN Envoy Staffan di Mistura separately. But without key opposition figures, what can these Syria talks really accomplish?

CRIME & DRUGS

This Four-Year Saga Shows How the US Became the Global Cops in the War on Terror
By Aviva Stahl

February 2, 2016 | 7:14 am
The case of a Somali-born man who was stripped of his British citizenship and recently sentenced in New York to nine years in federal prison on terrorism charges is being held up by civil liberties advocates as an example of the harsh US treatment of suspects linked to Islamic extremism and overreach by American authorities in the war on terror.

Mahdi Hashi, 26, pleaded guilty in May 2015 to a charge of conspiracy to provide material support to the Somali militant group al Shabaab. Prosecutors sought a 15-year sentence, maintaining he had deep ties to al Shabaab's leadership, as well as links to alleged suicide bombers used by the group. Hashi's co-defendants, Swedish citizens Ali Yasin Ahmed and Mohamed Yusuf, were each sentenced to 11 years in January.

While handing down Hashi's nine-year sentence in Brooklyn on Friday, US District Judge John Gleeson called the facts of the case "complicated."

"I believe you believe this organization you joined was dramatically different than what you thought or hoped it would be," the judge said.

Hashi's case caused significant controversy in Britain, where he lived from age six until he returned to Somalia as a young adult. In 2012, after he was already living abroad, Hashi was stripped of his British citizenship. "The Security Service assess that you have been involved in Islamicist extremism [sic] and present a risk to the national security of the United Kingdom due to your extremist activities," said the order from British Home Secretary Theresa May.

With the release on Sunday of a video purporting to show nine of ten known Paris terrorist attackers training in Syria and Iraq, national security agencies across the world are likely doubling their efforts to identify ISIS sympathizers within their own borders. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has already suggested terrorists planned to carry out another mass attack on the streets of Paris; at the same time, he defended his government's plan to extend the state of emergency imposed after the prior attacks.

Meanwhile, it looks increasingly plausible that foreign-trained ISIS fighters might eventually return home to attack the United States.

VICE News Reveals the Terrorism Blacklist Secretly Wielding Power Over the Lives of Millions
mir Shabibi and Ben Bryant

February 5, 2016 | 2:20 am
An American Muslim civil rights leader praised by George W. Bush, an economist honored by the British Queen, and a prominent anti-extremism campaigner have all been secretly given a "terrorism" designation on a confidential database that banks use as a reference tool for blacklisting customers, a VICE News investigation can reveal.

The highly influential World-Check database has also listed major charities, activists, and mainstream religious institutions under its category of "terrorism". Dozens of terror profiles in the database owned by Thomson Reuters seen by VICE News include:

  • Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Executive Director, Nihad Awad, one of a select group of American Muslim leaders invited to join former US President George W. Bush in a press conference condemning the 9/11 attacks. CAIR, the recipient of multiple leadership awards, is also terror-listed by World-Check.
  • Liberal Democrat politician Maajid Nawaz, who founded counter-extremism think tank Quilliam and has advised successive British prime ministers.
  • Former World Bank and Bank of England advisor Mohamed Iqbal Asaria, who was given a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award in the 2005 Queen's Honours List for services to international development.

the US BS ploy to be all cosying up to Russia a few weeks ago may well hhave been trhe usual USA cunning BS tactics

Is Russia helping the US win in Syria?

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Feb. 4 that a recent US intelligence assessment showed a drop in numbers of those fighting on behalf of the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq from 31,500 to 25,000, a sign that the Obama administration’s strategy is working, as many of these foreign fighters seek a new base in Libya and elsewhere.

Five reasons why Iran-Saudi conflict won't escalate
Relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia have been tense ever since the establishment of the Islamic Republic back in 1979.

There will not be a war between Iran and Saudi Arabia, for five main reasons.

Fourth, on the international level, Saudi Arabia believes that in the event of a military confrontation with Iran, the United States and the rest of the West may side with the Islamic Republic. Riyadh’s decision to cut ties with Tehran has received virtually no international support aside from some African countries that play no significant role in international power equations. Even US Secretary of State John Kerry has urged calm following the breakdown in the Saudi-Iranian relationship. There may have been a time when, because of Saudi Arabia’s oil or its position, Washington would have gone out of its way to serve the interests of Riyadh. However, now, even some US elites view Saudi Arabia as a slightly more civilized version of the Islamic State.

Are the Saudis ready to fight in Syria?
On Feb. 4, Saudi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Ahmed Asiri announced that Saudi Arabia is now ready to send ground troops to Syria to fight the Islamic State (IS). Saudi Arabia is part of the international anti-IS coalition led by the United States since September 2014. However, when it launched the war in Yemen to fight the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels almost a year ago, its priorities shifted and its airstrikes on IS subsided. In December, it launched a new Muslim anti-IS coalition, but this, too, remains ambiguous as a strategy and may be interpreted as yet another attempt by the Saudi regime to seek Islamic backing against its rival and archenemy, namely Iran. It is important to understand why the Saudis announced they are now willing to venture into the troubled waters of Syria with ground troops, allegedly to fight IS.

Iran reacts to Saudi's offer of troops in Syria
To Iran, Saudi Arabia sending troops to Syria is “suicidal,” at least according to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohammad Ali Jafari, who made the remark Feb. 6 at the funeral of a senior IRGC officer who was killed in Syria. Several other Iranian officials have also played down Saudi statements about an interest in contributing to the war on the Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

“It’s a joke,” said an Iranian military source who asked not to be identified in a phone interview with Al-Monitor. “We couldn't wish [for] more than that. If they can do it, then let them do it — but talking militarily, this is not easy for a country already facing defeat in another war, in Yemen, where after almost one year they have failed in achieving any real victory.

Will US, Russia be able to turn 'words on paper' into action in Syria?

MUNICH — World powers led by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that they had agreed on an ambitious plan for rapid humanitarian aid delivery to seven besieged areas in Syria, including air drops to territory held by the Islamic State and a temporary “cessation of hostilities” to be worked out over the next week.

Author Laura RozenPosted February 12, 2016
Under the plan, announced by Kerry and Lavrov at a midnight press conference in Munich after six hours of grueling meetings involving some 18 nations, the United Nations would convene two task forces, each co-chaired by the United States and Russia. One task force would begin work in Geneva this weekend to organize and oversee implementation of humanitarian aid delivery to the most besieged areas in Syria. These include not only areas accessible by truck convoy that are besieged by Syrian government forces and their allies, but one town, Deir ez-Zor, held by the Islamic State, where the plan is to air-drop assistance.

Can Erdogan bully Turkey's armed forces into invading Syria?

On Feb. 3, the Syrian army and its allies dealt a strategic blow to Ankara when they cut the land route between Aleppo and the Bab al-Salameh border crossing with Turkey in the Turkish province of Kilis. Keeping this route to Aleppo open had been of vital importance for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who, keen to topple the Damascus regime since 2011, have used every means at their disposal short of sending troops to Syria.

“The Syria Proxy War against the Islamic State (ISIS

In Syria, If You Can’t Find Moderates, Dress Up Some Extremists
By Tony Cartalucci
129575.jpg

The BBC’s latest production is as absurd as it is transparent and abhorrent.

Upon reading the increasingly desperate headlines pumped out by the Western media as Western-backed terrorist forces begin to fold under an effective joint Syrian-Russian offensive to take the country back, readers will notice that though the term “moderate rebels” or “moderate opposition” is used often, the Western media is seemingly incapable of naming a single faction or leader among them.

The reason for this is because there are no moderates and there never were. Since 2007, the US has conspired to arm and fund extremists affiliated with Al Qaeda to overthrow the government of Syria and destabilize Iranian influence across the entire Middle East.

Washington’s strategy consists in spearheading a broader regional war by inciting Turkey, Saudi Arabia as well as Israel to do the “dirty work for us”.

Until recently, Syrian Government Forces together with their allies (Russia, Iran, Hezbollah) have been confronting so-called “opposition rebels” largely composed of “moderate” terrorists and mercenaries, with US-NATO intelligence and special forces forces operating covertly within their ranks.

The Al Qaeda affiliated terrorists and the Islamic State (ISIS) forces are supported by US-NATO-Israel and their Persian Gulf GCC allies. Turkey and Saudi Arabia, in close liaison with Washington have played a central role in the recruitment, training and financing of the terrorists.

Sofar, this proxy war has unfolded without a direct confrontation between US-NATO allied forces and Syrian government forces, which are supported militarily by Russia and Iran.

A major transition is now occurring in the conduct of the war on Syria. The terrorists are being defeated by Syrian government forces with the support of Russia. The proxy war (under the formal banner of the “war on terrorism”) has reached its climax.

Turkey Shells Kurdish-Held Areas in Syria as Russia Continues Bombing Campaign

The Turkish army shelled Kurdish militia in northern Syria for a second day on Sunday, while Russia made clear it would continue bombing Syrian rebel targets, raising doubts that a planned ceasefire would bring much relief.

Major powers agreed on Friday to a limited cessation of hostilities in Syria but the deal does not take effect until the end of this week and was not signed by any warring parties — the Damascus government and numerous rebel factions fighting it.

Russian bombing raids directed at rebel groups are meanwhile helping the Syrian army to achieve what could be its biggest victory of the war in the battle for Aleppo, the country's largest city and commercial hub before the conflict.

A Second MSF Hospital Has Been Bombed in Syria in the Last 10 Day

A hospital supported by medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the Idlib province of northern Syria was "deliberately" hit by air strikes on Monday and eight people are missing, the charity has said in a statement.

"This is a deliberate attack against a health establishment," said Massimiliano Rebaudengo, head of mission of the NGO also known as Doctors Without Borders. "The destruction of this hospital deprives about 40,000 people of healthcare in this conflict zone."

MSF said the hospital in Maaret al-Numan was destroyed after being hit by four missiles following two attacks within an interval of a few minutes. At least eight people are unaccounted for. It did not identify the origin of the air strike.

Saudi Arabia's coalition in Yemen is using internationally banned cluster munition explosives supplied by the United States, despite evidence of civilian casualties and the fact that the weapons fall short of US weaponry standards, according to Human Rights Watch.

HRW says the weapons were recently transferred to the Saudi-led coalition, and "are being used in civilian areas contrary to US export requirements and also appear to be failing to meet the reliability standard required for US export of the weapons."

"Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners, as well as their US supplier, are blatantly disregarding the global standard that says cluster munitions should never be used under any circumstances," said Steve Goose, arms director at Human Rights Watch and chair of the international Cluster Munition Coalition. "The Saudi-led coalition should investigate evidence that civilians are being harmed in these attacks and immediately stop using them."

Cluster munitions, also known as "cluster bombs," are weapons containing multiple "sub-explosives" that are released and dispersed over an area. Due to the threat they pose to civilians (often, fallen submunitions fail to explode and are highly dangerous until they're cleared) a total of 118 countries have banned their use.

Turkey threatens fragile Syria peace accord
Turkish military attacks on US-aligned Syrian Kurdish groups and the possibility of Turkish and Saudi ground troops entering Syria could upend the fragile peace accord worked out by the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) last week. The introduction of Turkish and Saudi ground forces would further risk a major escalation in the war and a whole new round of misery for the Syrian people.

NATO Threatens Russia, “We are Rolling into A New Cold War”. Speech by Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitri Medvedev
2016 Munich Security Conference

Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished colleague Mr Valls, distinguished Mr Ischinger, my speech will be of a more general nature, but I hope it will be useful.

The first cold war ended 25 years ago. This is not long in terms of history, but it is a considerable period for individual people and even for generations. And it is certainly sufficient for assessing our common victories and losses, setting new goals and, of course, avoiding a repetition of past mistakes.

The Munich Security Conference has been known as a venue for heated and frank discussion. This is my first time here. Today I’d like to tell you about Russia’s assessment of the current European security situation and possible solutions to our common problems, which have been aggravated by the deterioration of relations between Russia and the West.

Before coming to this conference, I met with President Putin. We talked about his speech at the Munich conference in 2007. He said then that ideological stereotypes, double standards and unilateral actions do not ease but only fan tensions in international relations, reducing the international community’s opportunities for adopting meaningful political decisions.

Journalists in exile: Getting the news back into Syria - The Listen...
Plenty of news comes out of Syria these days - not much of it good. The majority of the mainstream coverage - ISIL, migration, regional and international rivalries - tends to be about how Syria's war affects other countries and their interests.
But from 2011 and right up to the present, Syrian journalists have been documenting what many still call the Syrian revolution, reflecting back for Syrians the story of their own embattled nation.

For audiences in Syria, the morning news can be a matter of knowing where the frontlines have shifted, the price of gasoline, what goods are in short supply or whose sons and daughters were killed in last night's airstrikes.

Documenting the war, and indeed, the harsh reality of life under ISIL, some Syrian media outlets are now based in southern Turkey, cities such as Gaziantep and Sanliurfa, where bombs and conflict are a border crossing away.

But in recent months that border has offered little protection from a movement which has proved itself ... (more)

Russia Denies 'War Crimes' After Hospitals and Schools Were Bombed in Syria
By Sally Hayden and Reuters

February 17, 2016 | 12:05 am
The Kremlin has strongly rejected accusations by Turkey that Russia committed an "obvious war crime" in Syria after missile attacks killed scores of people on Monday, hitting several medical facilities and schools.

"We categorically do not accept such statements, the more so as every time those making these statements are unable to prove their unfounded accusations in any way," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a conference call on Tuesday.

Turkey blamed Russia for Monday's attacks, which saw almost 50 civilians killed when missiles hit at least five medical facilities — including an Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)-supported hospital — and two schools in rebel-held areas of Syria. Both the United Nations and France have also condemned the attacks, with the UN calling them a blatant violation of international law, while France echoed Turkey in saying they constituted war crimes.

At least 14 people died on Monday in the northern Syrian town of Azaz, the last rebel stronghold before the border with Turkey, when missiles hit a children's hospital and a school sheltering refugees.

Fake US-Russia “Peace Diplomacy”. The Syrian Conflict Deepens…War between False Friends and Misaligned Enemies
By Binoy Kampmark
Global Research, February 15, 2016

syria-destruction-war04-400x265.jpg

Peace discussions tend to contain within them the seeds of the next conflict. Treaties, agreements and pacts to end war are made to reassure combating parties that they will, at some point, have annother crack at each other. Even as they take place, participating sides look for gains, seek to edge others into corners, and gain merciful advantages.

That was the nature of talks between Russia and the US held on Friday. Secretary of State John Kerry claimed that the sides had “agreed to implement a nationwide cessation of hostilities in a week’s time.” Not only did Kerry concede this to be “ambitious,” the very fact that ISIS and the Nusra Front played no part in such arrangements rendered such discussions idiosyncratic at best.

Turkey ups the ante in Syria

Turkey has raised the stakes in Syria by unleashing a campaign of heavy cross-border shelling against Russian-supported fighters from the People's Protection Units (YPG) that Ankara insists will continue despite international calls to desist. Ankara wants to prevent the Kurdish group, which it considers a terrorist organization allied with the Kurdistan Workers Party, from gaining more territory along Turkey’s border with Syria. In a separate development bound to further increase tensions, Turkey also shelled Syrian military positions across the border from Hatay province around the same time it unleashed its campaign against the YPG.

Summary⎙ Print Turkey's shelling of YPG positions in Syria is not only fueling animosity between Ankara and Moscow, but is also causing fresh tensions with the United States.

The Battle for Aleppo Shows That US Strategy in Syria Is in Tatters

The countryside north of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, is the latest crucial battlefield in the Syrian civil war — and it could also become the place where the United States' strategy to combat the so-called Islamic State in Syria falls apart.

The US-led coalition had been backing Aleppo rebels who were trying to capture the last stretch of border with Turkey controlled by the Islamic State, but those rebels were left stranded after a new offensive by Syrian regime forces earlier this month cut them off from other rebel areas. Now the Kurdish forces that have been the United States' closest allies in the fight against the Islamic State have seized the opportunity to attack these US-backed rebels, in an attempt to seize what's left of the territory they control in north Aleppo.

The U.S. has hit an ISIS camp in Libya, targeting an operative who was behind two
attacks on tourists in Tunisia

Friday, February 19, 2016 5:32 AM EST
American warplanes struck an Islamic State camp in Libya early Friday, targeting a senior Tunisian operative linked to two major terrorist attacks in Tunisia last year, according to a Western official.
The airstrike, on a camp near Sabratha west of Tripoli, also killed more than 30 Islamic State recruits at the site, many of whom were believed to be from Tunisia, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.
Intelligence officials were trying to determine whether the operative, Noureddine Chouchane, was killed in the strike, the official said.
