Syrian government fighter jets have attacked rebel-held Idlib province a day after a suspected chemical attack killed scores of people.

The Russian defence ministry is blaming the rebels for Tuesday's attack, saying Syrian government jets hit a warehouse containing the gas.

With local hospitals failing to cope with the sheer number of victims, some were taken to neighbouring Turkey for treatment.

Accusations fly at UN over Syria 'gas attack

The suspected chemical attack in Syria's rebel-held Idlib province which killed scores people has become the subject of a diplomatic stand-off at the United Nations.

Britain, France and the US are pushing for a Security Council vote on a resolution, accusing Syria's government of responsibility.

A vote could go ahead on Thursday if negotiations with Russia are successful.

But the US is threatening its own unilateral action if the UN fails to respond.

The US strikes an air base, firing its first salvo against the Syrian government in the six-year-old civil war.

US President Trump has been both congratulated and condemned for ordering missile strikes on a Syrian air base suspected of using chemical weapons.

The attack was seen by some as a warning to the regime of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad that the period of impunity is over and he will be punished.

But the past six years have shown that military action has failed to stop the mass killings and end the war.

France and Germany have renewed calls for a political solution. But what kind of roadmap will be accepted by the main players in the conflict?

Last year the opposition rejected a United Nations proposal that had Assad remaining in the political system.
