Idlib hospitals overwhelmed after suspected gas attack

Deadly chemical attack in Syria kills dozens

Gas Attack Is Said to Kill Dozens in Syria

Syrian government fighter jets have attacked rebel-held Idlib province a day after a suspected chemical attack killed scores of people.

The Russian defence ministry is blaming the rebels for Tuesday's attack, saying Syrian government jets hit a warehouse containing the gas.

With local hospitals failing to cope with the sheer number of victims, some were taken to neighbouring Turkey for treatment.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
Trump changed his tune on Syria… A poison gas attack that killed 72 people this week is “an affront to humanity,” he said, adding that “my attitude toward Syria and Assad, has changed very much.” At the UN security council, Britain and the US assailed Russia, which blamed rebel groups for the attack—a claim US officialsdismissed as “not credible.”

Accusations fly at UN over Syria 'gas attack

The suspected chemical attack in Syria's rebel-held Idlib province which killed scores people has become the subject of a diplomatic stand-off at the United Nations.

Britain, France and the US are pushing for a Security Council vote on a resolution, accusing Syria's government of responsibility.

A vote could go ahead on Thursday if negotiations with Russia are successful.

But the US is threatening its own unilateral action if the UN fails to respond.

Rosiland Jordan reports from the UN headquarters in New York.

All options on the table in wake of Syrian gas attack, US warns
The US accuses Bashar al-Assad of going "beyond a red line" with a poison gas attack on Syrian civilians, with Donald Trump pointing the finger at Russia and Vice President Mike Pence saying "all options" are now on the table in the country's civil war.

Father grieves for baby twins killed in Syrian gas massacre
This Syrian father is cradling his two dead twins in his arms — just two tiny victims of a chemical attack which killed dozens and shocked the world. More than 20 members of the same family have been buried, as the town of Khan Sheikhoun counts its dead.

USA ESCALATION

Idlib attack : US considers serious action

The US Department of Defence is currently presenting President Donald Trump with options in Syria.
While the United States has been bombing ISIL targets there, it's avoided taking on the military of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Now Trump is saying the suspected chemical attack on civilians in Syria earlier this week - which it blames on Assad - is a turning point and every response is on the table.

Patty Culhane reports from Washington, DC

US attacks Syrian airbase

Published on Apr 7, 2017
A few hours ago the US launched dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The US says the target was a Syrian airbase from which the government of Bashar al-Assad launched a chemical weapons attack on its own people last Tuesday.

US strikes in Syria: Game changer or deterrent?

The US strikes an air base, firing its first salvo against the Syrian government in the six-year-old civil war.

The missile attack is being seen as a message to Damascus, deterring it from repeating Tuesday's horrors of Idlib, which saw at least 80 people killed.

The US intervention may come as a shot in the arm for the Syrian opposition, reeling under a government offensive backed by Russia in recent months.

Moscow's response has been swift, calling the US action an act of "aggression".

Allies rallied around to support Trump, for whom the strike could be a masterstroke in deflecting the growing criticism at home.

So, will this response to the suspected Idlib chemical attack have a decisive impact on the unending violence? And how will Trump's 180-degree turnaround affect US-Russia relations?

Dozens of US missiles pound Syrian airfield after gas attack
The attack, which killed about seven people, targets Syria's Shayrat air base, home to warplanes which the US says mounted this week's chemical weapons raid and inflicted a "slow and brutal death" on civilians.

Syria missile strike leaves the world wondering — what now?
For nearly three years the international system has been aware of evidence that the Syrian President may not have declared all of his chemical weapons stockpiles — and these strikes highlight the dilemma about what to do now, writes Middle East correspondent Matt Brown.

What did Trump achieve? He has, for now, deflected attention from his long list of self-inflicted woes. On April 7, for the first time in weeks, not a word was heard about investigations of his campaign’s links to Russian hacking of last year’s presidential election; cable television forgot about the diet of lies Trump feeds to the nation, and his unsubstantiated allegations against perceived enemies. Talk of an unraveling of his young presidency tapered off.

Trump will ride his newfound bipartisan support for a time. But he will have to do more to keep it. For starters, he can find out what Putin knew about Assad’s sarin gas stockpile, and of the recent attack. He will have to find a way to defuse the tension with North Korea, which fired yet another ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on April 4. And he must stop making ad hominem, false attacks against his enemies. Trump, in short, will have to keep making a stab at statesmanship. One short show of presidential leadership will not be sufficient.—Steve LeVine

Is political transition a reality in Syria? - Inside Story

US President Trump has been both congratulated and condemned for ordering missile strikes on a Syrian air base suspected of using chemical weapons.

The attack was seen by some as a warning to the regime of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad that the period of impunity is over and he will be punished.

But the past six years have shown that military action has failed to stop the mass killings and end the war.

France and Germany have renewed calls for a political solution. But what kind of roadmap will be accepted by the main players in the conflict?

Last year the opposition rejected a United Nations proposal that had Assad remaining in the political system.

Last month negotiators at a fifth-round of peace talks brokered by the UN in Geneva called for a political transition, a new constitution and elections within 18 months.

But can a compromise be reached? And what is the realistic way to proceed?

Was the US missile strike on Syria legal?
The US attack on a Syrian airbase happened without warning and without permission. But did the Trump administration break the law? Short answer — yes, according to one international law expert.

Russia 'strongly condemns' US missile strike on Syria
Russia warns the US cruise missile strikes on a Syrian air base could have "extremely serious" consequences, as America says it's preparing additional sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Why is Egypt's Christian minority targeted? – Inside Story

Two attacks on one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar - Palm Sunday. Dozens of people are killed.

The first blast struck St George church in Tanta, a city north of Cairo. Then a suicide bomber struck outside the main Coptic church in Alexandria, Saint Mark's Cathedral, where Pope Tawadros 2nd had led the service.

The bombings come just a few weeks before Pope Francis is due to visit Egypt.

So what's the Egyptian government doing to protect the Christian minority?

Did Bipartisan Russia Hysteria Help Fuel Trump's Rush to Bomb Assad?

In part two of our interview, journalist Rania Khalek argues that the U.S. strike on the Assad regime continues policy that tacitly helps Al Qaeda and ISIS, all the while raising the threat of conflict with Russia - a threat exacerbated by the recent bipartisan frenzy over President Trump's ties to Moscow.

The Syria Chemical Weapons Saga: The Staging of a US-NATO Sponsored Humanitarian Disaster

By Prof Michel Chossudovsky
Global Research, April 06, 2017
Global Research 12 December 2012

Author’s Note and Update

In the light of recent developments and accusations directed against the Syrian government, it is important once more to set the record straight: the US supported rebels possess chemical weapons.

The following article first published in December 2012 [scroll down] documents how the Pentagon not only provided chemical weapons to Al Nusra, an affiliated Al Qaeda terrorist organization, but also provided training to the rebels in the use of these weapons.
