U.S. drops "mother of all bombs" in Afghanistan, marking weapon's first use

The U.S. dropped a bomb containing 11 tons of explosives on an ISIS cave complex in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on the border with Pakistan on Thursday, a Pentagon spokesman confirmed to CBS News’ David Martin.

The bomb is officially called a GBU-43 or Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), leading to its nickname as the “mother of all bombs.” The weapon is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the U.S. arsenal and has never before been used in combat.

The strike, on Tuesday in Tabqah, Syria, was the third time in a month that American-led airstrikes may have killed civilians or allies, and comes even as the Pentagon is investigating two previous airstrikes that killed or wounded scores of civilians in a mosque complex in Syria and in a building in west Mosul, Iraq.

The U.S. government has prosecuted almost 800 people for international terrorism-related offenses since 9/11, with a near-perfect record of conviction.
The Intercept’s Trial and Terror database, compiled by Trevor Aaronson and Margot Williams, brings questionable tactics into sharp relief and exposes the many contradictions of the war on terror.

edit

Most of them never even got close to committing an act of violence.

Most defendants have been charged with material support, criminal conspiracy, immigration violations, and making false statements — vague, nonviolent offenses that give prosecutors wide latitude for scoring quick convictions or plea bargains. While defendants caught up in FBI stings have often received harsh sentences, those with real terrorist ties have leveraged their connections for leniency. Meanwhile, the government has quietly released hundreds convicted on terrorism charges with little if any monitoring, suggesting they never posed much of a threat in the first place.

Turkish air strikes target Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria

Turkish planes have bombed what it says are Kurdish rebel positions in both Syria and Iraq.

A Turkish official said about 200 PKK fighters were killed in the strikes around Sinjar Mountains in Iraq.

The military said the men were smuggling weapons into Turkey to carry out attacks there.

A UK-based Syrian monitoring group said at least 18 US-backed Syrian Kurdish fighters were killed in the Syrian operation.

Iraq's Kurdish Peshmerga said some of its fighters were also killed in the strikes.

Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Gaziantep, close to Turkey's border with Syria.

The Real Defenders of Democracy: Syria and the Struggle against the International Despotism of Wall Street

By Stephen Gowans, May 02, 2017

A more sophisticated view holds that there exists in Syria an indigenous Islamist movement which—though rejecting democracy as a man-made ideology and seeking rule by the Quran (Islam’s holy book) and Sunna (the record of the Islamic prophet Mohammad’s thought and actions)—is fundamentally democratic insofar as it represents the aspirations of the majority. This view, however, suffers from two fatal defects: (1) There is no evidence that a majority of Syrians hold Islamist aspirations; and (2) a significant part of the Islamist opposition to the secular Syrian government is of foreign origin.

The US Supplies Weapons to Al Qaeda in Syria, via Bulgaria?

By Sophie Mangal, May 03, 2017

The Bulgarian newspaper Trud which initiated a journalistic investigation sent an official request to both companies to clarify what the received money was spent on. Chemring responded some ammunition for the U.S. and its allies’ armies was purchased from Vazovski Mashinostroitelni Zavodi (VMZ-Sopot). It included 122mm rockets for the Grad MLRS, 73mm anti-tank shells and 40mm ammo for rocket launchers. The other company, Orbital ATK, simply ignored the request.

My government has learned (or remembers) nothing from Vietnam, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the British invasion of Afghanistan.

Impotent at home, US Presidents attack abroad. Not even Obama was immune.
