I'm a huge fan of my $24.95 USD Timex (with a light up dial) and genuine leather band. It keeps perfect time. Every year I put a new battery in it. It really gives me confidence like my 5" dick, however I'm still "cheap and tasteless."

Yeah - budget does come into play unfortunately. I'm not hugely bothered about it lasting forever or being top notch - just has to look ok, do the job, and be fairly understated. :)

I have a Swatch Irony that looks good and does the job really well. It's cheap but well-made and not ghastly. Nor is it a silly fashion watch. I wanted a watch that told the time, day, and date. It does that very well and it's durable.

my man, your watch (if you wear one) is the FIRST thing people judge you on. be they lovers, contemporaries, rivals strangers. And a 40 dollar timex says “cheap, tasteless and boring with ZERO confidence”, its best to have 2 watches (save your pennies) one for the day to day like a Seiko or eligen (sp?) and one more expensive dressier watch like a top end invicta or even a rolex

as for the day to day I wear a chase durer 1000xl S.F watch, it’s like 685-890 dollars depending and my dressy watch(es) are a chase durer stainless and a rolex Daytona….. both chase durer watches I got through work and a massive discount, and the rolex I got in the line of duty from some one who didn’t need it any more cause god knows some one with my shitty check can’t afford a 19k watch

try jewelry stores that sell “pre owned” or refurbished watches, that will save some coins, ebay is a good way to find deals, and quite honestly if the watch is a little warm on your wrist, who’s gonna know? Just remember to take it to the old Punjabi fella in the flea market to get it serviced or a new battery… not the dealership………… hope this helps, don’t be a cheap skate when it comes to your watch, on the strait market you get what you pay for, same as that race car in your pic, didn’t get there on the cheap

Who wants to know anyone who would judge you by your watch? Doesn't that seem pitifully superficial? Warren Buffet wears a Timex. You think anyone judges him by that? Buy and wear the watch you like. There are watches I would like but are too expensive, like the Nardin astronomical complications, but really, does anyone need a tourbillon? They're pointless in a wristwatch anyway.

If you really want the best watch money can buy, hit up this guy. Or this guy. Either of them will build you a work of art that nobody else will recognize and may bring you the joy of owning something truly special. But no mechanical watch will keep time as well as a simple quartz Timex.

I've read that in the odd lifestyle article, but never heard more than one person express that view out loud ... and he was a schmuck about external stuff (and had the bankruptcies to prove it).
I'm sure you're serious, axlx, but I think you exaggerate the prevalence.

My opinion, any way.

Get a watch without a second hand. Do you ever wonder why Joe shmoe would need a second hand on a wrist watch?

Meh, I disagree. I use the second hand to time steaming broccoli and carrots in my stir fry. I take a jigger of water, dump it in, immediately slam the lid, and hold it down with both hands. I can do that any time in the cooking process without having to set and press a timer button. A second hand is very useful for that.

There's a radio ad here in New York for a watch seller and that's the first thing they say. Naturally they like to make sure you understand that everyone will think you're a loser unless you have a watch from Tourneau.

Heheh - I'm liking the posts guys!

I liked the look of both the Tissot and Sturmanskie watches, Steve. They are a bit pricey for me, but they both totally look they way I like.

In terms of the expensive/cheap debate - I'm kinda after something I like the look of, something that suits me and just gets on with the job without being too attention-grabbing. Usually, if I like it - I'm not too bothered about the price either way.

I'm not that into faddy stuff, but if something looks quite classy and 'timeless' (odd word in this context) I'd get it anyway.
I am actually quite cheap and tasteless ;) - but wouldn't necessarily choose a watch like that.

Thanks again for all the suggestions - will enjoy checkin them all out and coming to a decision! :D

I'm a big watch guy...have about 40 of them...some left to me by people who know that I like them..some hairlooms passed on to me by my grandfathers and godfather.

in that price range I like Fossil and a brand here in the Us HQ'd in Calif called Freestyle....VERY well made and reasonable. they are made for surfers and divers and sports in general and I have one that I have had for 8-9 years stainless steel and back light dial when you press a button that has taken all kinds of wear and tear and still looks great and works great..its called Hammerhead.
anyway ..their brand is very good..like fossil is too.
if you could wait and save up I would strongly suggest you go for a TagHeuer. very well made...very accurate...designs that range from "classic" to some that are modern classics...including the Link with their distinctive braclet. they go from work to formal to play..and that can be the same watch that is perfect for all occasion.

and just my opinion about some of the comments above. you should never buy a watch just for the "status" of it. But a watch IS a personal item and to some it will say something about you...your style..your tastes..just like your clothes or grooming can. choose a watch that YOU like! like the way it feels on your wrist..they way it looks on you..the price you are comfortable with and can afford...and the functions you want. I agree with all this and wholeheatedly recommend you follow your heart.
but I will disagree with the above that says NO ONE will judge you by it. I think no one SHOULD judge you by it. but the fact is that some WILL look at your watch and treat you differently. I have had it happen to me..in a store where they have noticed (and commented on so I know they noticed) a watch I am wearing and treated me as if ..yes..i could afford what they were selling! lol (even if I couldn't..they had no idea I inherited the Rolex..lol) and a matre d' in Las Vegas did the same thing once too..and my table appeared while otheres were waiting. like I said...this SHOULDN"T happen..but to pronounce that it DOESN"T happen is not true either...we live in a world where it is dog eat dog and unfortunately money DOES talk

my man, this is a large penis site.... are you serious?
I don't WANT to be judged by hight or size or the cars i drive or the clothes i wear, but to quote the poet jagger, you can't always get what you want, in fact, basicly never in this case. think you're a bove it? next time you're in the city, and you see a guy walking up to you and you think "damn this homeless guy is about to ask me for money" stop and ask yourself "how did i know he's homeless? was it his lack of a mortgage payment and power bill in his hand. or was it the 3 women's sweat shirts, 2 fanny packs, worn out jeans with shorts over them, 1 flip fliop 1 boot and the rob zombie circa 2001 hair and beard?"

warren buffet can wear a timex, bill gates wears a digital casio watch... he's bill gates, he could buy the rights to the concept of time if he wanted. the OP isn't bill gates, neither am I, neither are you. So when people see you him or I, and gander down at our wrist and see a 45 dollar watch, they are gonnathink of you as low end. didn't say it was right but puppies die, ice cream makes ya fat and people make judgements and assumptions about you baised of simple observations. its life

You could probably make such a judgment because you're into watches, axlx.
But how many people have that same trained eye?
I don't ... and when I walk into a jeweler's store, I usually see a huge number of watches, most of which belong to no brand that I can identify.

And I personally don't see an obvious correlation between price and physical attractiveness ... at least not once you're past the very cheapest makes (and some of those are reasonably attractive).

The other thing is that there are so many fake watches out there now. If I see what looks like a Rolex on a guy's wrist, I have no idea if it cost $3000 or $30.

You're no doubt right. There are people who can identify a whole range of high-quality, expensive watches, and will judge people on what they see.
But do the people able and inclined to do this, exist in any great number?

any one with money having come from it or new to it (neither is me) notice 2 things about a man, his watch, and his shoes. clean/neatly shaven, clean pressed clothes, neat hair... these are things you notice like stop signs or gun shots, they grab your attention from 15 feet away. but a watch and shoes are the way any person of statue of standing in life sizes you up and engages you, read "the art of the deal" "winning through intimidation" 7 habits...... any dealing of substance one ofr the first 5 major sociological check offs is the watch, i teach sizing people up for a living. it's not just me
