DJM277: is it just me or does it seem that wearing a jockstrap is almost a thing in the past?

Very rarely will I see a guy putting on a jockstrap in the lockerroom. It seems most guys either wear compression shorts or just briefs. As for myself I always wear a jockwhen work out they provide more support than a brief.

I do wear a jock for support, so do my sons...they are all in their mid-teens.

I think you are right.  It seems to me that the humble jock has ended up with three very different roles:

    1.  Support for sportsmen.  In the UK this has declined a lot.  It was always more prevalent in some sports than others, eg rugger and in cricket (to accommodate the 'box'), and it always tended to be the guys who needed more support who wore them.  But many never wore them, including some who might have been wise to ... the image of Linford Christie thundering down the track comes to mind -- how much faster could he have run with that major obstruction between his legs safely hoisted out of the way?  ;)

    2.  Sex appeal; this is maybe where jocks are more like thongs, and I guess appeal more to the gay market.  However, I once had some made in bright colours: pillar box red, royal blue, jet black; although my wife very much approved they earnt me a bit too much of the wrong sort of attention elsewhere.

    3.  Support (worn all day) for some very well endowed men, who can't wear ordinary undergear without discomfort or worse.  Usually it requires jocks made to special order, and they end up far more in the category of medical aid.   This is the category I fall into, and by no stretch of the imagination is there any connection with sport or with sex appeal.  But at least in the UK there are plenty of guys who need the same -- the company who make mine for me seem to send them all over the country from stock.  There must be quite a few men like us about.   :)

dable_wi: As a younger man, I always wore jocks when playing sports. Even just working out.

A quick sidebar question: How do you handle the straps in the back? Do you cinch them up, effectively threading the crack of your ass? Or do you leave them strapped along the underside of your buttocks? I have seen guys do both.

When I first started wearing jocks, I wore them as in the latter example, but as my package got larger, I needed more support and found that the "ass-threaded" approach suited my support needs better. There are however some drawbacks

My dad bought my first jock and taught me to wear it.  Still do, but you are right, see very few in the locker room.  Jocks were a "right of passage" for young teen males that has been lost.

And I wear the straps below my ass cheeks.

It may be a thing of the past for "kids" today, but I wear a jockstrap pretty much all the time just because I find them the most comfortable type/style of underwear. These compression shorts that are so "in" just make me hot and sweaty. I like having the air on my ass. Plus boxers of any type or breifs or any other type of underwear just doesn't hold my dick up comfortably. To me its all about comfort.

Jocks a thing of the past not really. I love the feel of a jock and enjoy just wearing a tee and a jock around the house. Very masculine feel. To me jocks will never go out of style. You just don't see them in the locker rooms much.
They were a requirment in high school and that probably is not the rule now. We would have jock inspections weekly when least expected. I would be the one with the boner first.....

I am 47 and still wear a jockstrap for the support either for sports or just under sweats. Its too bad young boys don't learn of the importance of jocks to wearing underwear to gym class in school and in later life.

Wearing a jock is very best thing a boy-Man can wear.

I've worn a jock instead of regular underwear for years. It helps keep things together and protected. I wouldn't wear anything else. (Freeballing is too scary!)

I bought my first jockstrap this year. it was not easy finding one to buy(had to order it from the internet) but thank god a guy in my town (a gay one) who makes mens underwear (MED) made a jockstraps series so i bought one. I once had it one while in the gym and all the guys would look at me like i was a gay pornstar. Never had it one in the gym and i have to wash it when my brother and father are not home so that they wont see it.
I believe the reason is that a "mans" ass is not suppose to be exposed to anyone to see or imagine anything lol

Just seems to me like wearing a jock is a lot more comfortable than letting your dick hang down your pants leg...

I dig wearin' a jock. Makes me feel manly and/or athletic. You can tell that all pro-football players wear 'em cause sometimes you can see the strap on thier asses. And, by the way, the only way to wear it is with the strap on your ass NOT in it!

Just a little sidebar here, yes while you wear a jock with the straps under your cheeks if you want more support you can buy a dance belt which gives a lot more support and has no obvious lines( it's a thing style usually sometimes you can get a brief coverage but more of a little boy thing)
