I was at another website reading the posts and a member started a nasty thread.

One reply said: Whatever......we already know who you are (with a link)

I click on the link and I see:

==================================================

An XXXX member Was Busted on Dateline For Trying To Fuck a 12 Year Old!!!
If you watch Dateline on NBC they gave out this fucker's screen name and that he also frequents XXXX So is HIM!!

The fucking perv is MEM

They said he is out on bail and that explains why he is still posting here.

Fuck this sicko, I looked up his info and his email is mem@gmail.com

I also looked up his ip and here it is 911.88.000.111

So SPAM this fucking perv!! and MODS PLEASE BAN HIM!!!

=============================================

So I freak out that they have my real e-mail exposed (the above ones are fake) and my real IP.
The only thing that does not make sense is that the post was made in January. So I am thinking it is impossible.

Then they also have replies to this post and it says bad things about me with the name MEM in it. So I'm thinking I'm going crazy. I report the post.

I check my gmail account and there is one message.

ALERT RESPONSE*

You've been pranked by the [you] code on XXXX Pranks Forum.

These forums take your personal information and reflect it back at you - nobody else can see it but you.

Gotcha!

Welcome To XXXX, this happens to everyone!

:biggrin1::frown1::tongue::mad::wink::confused: :eek::rolleyes::redface: And I felt all these emotions.

Yeah, I reported the post and told them to ban the guy for posting my public info, before I even knew what was going on. When I first clicked on the link I said... hey that guy has my screen name...oh my GOD is that my email...
*no it can't be it must be just similar and I am reading it wrong*
:rofl:

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. On another forum I read someone posted a message saying, "I've hacked the computer of someone here. Click this link for a screenshot of his hard drive." So I click the link and--eek!--there's a screenshot of my hard drive.

I had my roommate, who was more computer literate than I am, check it out. As it turns out, the link was to a file that used some sort of scripting to display the contents of your hard drive. So when my roommate clicked the link, he saw the contents of his hard drive, not mine. Phew, what a relief. Dirty trick, though.

At least I'm glad I had an e-mail to tell me it was a joke.

All the geeks would have known right away it was a prank..lol... the maximum usable number in all 4 decimal places of an IP address is 254... so this is the max.. 254.254.254.254

But then I'm a dork soo..

I made up that number

It started with 138.xx.xxx.xxx (I x'd out the rest of the numbers) the 2nd set are two digits, and the 3rd and 4th are under 254.

It was my real IP address. I did a Google search and clicked on the link and it gave me my IP address.

That is horriible. I have a pretty good sense of humor, but I just don't find that 'funny' at all and I would kill whomever was responsible. It's just mean.

Yeah, dude, I make my living as an IT rep, and I find this shit funny but VERY cruel. I have had people on the verge of nervous breakdowns because of these types of pranks. I would never pull them on anyone, but I still sort of laugh at them.

It was obviously automated mem. All that info can be obtained easily...

Like those avatars that list your IP and ISP and port.

yeah this variable was created so you could use it like hello,*you" and your username would show up. It's been used very creatively since.

If there is a foreign bank account with 1 million dollars waiting for me, I'm willing to make a good faith deposit and supply my social security number right away! :biggrin1:
