I would just like to say that I am straight, and I find the weight room repulsive lol. It smells like b.o. and like someone took a shit every time I'm in there. Not trying to give TMI, or be gross, but that is my association with it. Even if I see a dude that is cut the fuck up, and has the perfect physique, I don't look at him in a sexual way whatsoever. I actually admire his body because that is how I want to look. That, and I think "man, he probably stinks like ass right now". lol Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but that is my sentiment while in the locker room. I shower publicly, and take steam baths butt-ass naked with dudes, all the while trying not to think of women (testosterone flowing after workout), and get a boner lol. To each his own though.

I don't think you burst anyone's bubble because this thread wasn't directed toward you individually. No one posted asking if you specifically find it erotic or attractive.

The dynamic you mention, however, is interesting and is actually what I was referring to: guys being motivated by seeing other guys motivated. In the case of the weight room -- a situation which deals with the male body (the very center of sexuality itself) -- it is inevitable that it would resemble eroticism or even homoeroticism.

I'm not saying you all want to fuck each other. I'm saying a ton of other things. But I forget that usually this forum isn't the best place to become philosophical. lol

With all due respect, you asked what straight guys had to say about the homoeroticism that you witness or "feel" in the locker room, and I commented on it. I completely understand that it wasn't directed towards me (I'm not schizophrenic); however, I gave my opinion (the only opinion I have). I do not feel that I was off-topic at all with my comment.
And, for all you know, maybe I did "burst someone's bubble". And if that's the case, I am terribly sorry.

A well sculpted female or a muscled masculine one is admired by anyone, str8, gay or bi or male or female. Its the reason why many mythical creatures and deities were created in such an image, hence the notion " Body of a God " . Beauty has no boundaries and is limitless. Its what gives this life and this world meaning like the peacock's plumage or the gallop of a mustang.

That! I think everyone appreciates something beautiful. People who are into fitness see bodies differently than people who are not (I've been on both sides of that fence). There's a woman in my gym who I don't find even remotely sexually attractive, but everytime I see her training I find myself staring. She has the most incredibly beautiful back and I can't help but gawk when I see her lifting. She's easily in her fifties and absolutely nothing about her is erotic to me, but when I see the shadows in her back I just see so much hard work and dedication, and as an artist, I can't help but to be captivated by the countours. I think to assume that while there may be some homoerotic energy, in some cases... maybe you're just throwing your own spin on it, because you feel erotic when you look at those bodies.

Sizing each other up is now homoerotic? Looking at something that is covered up and hidden is natural. People want to see what others look like to confirm that they are "normal". See who is bigger, who could hurt them, who is the competition, who they want to their bodies to look like (ie hero-worship).

It's the bubble thing I'm referring to. I'm the one who started this thread, and I didn't have a bubble per se. I wanted to know what others thought about it, and I don't recall actually only asking for the opinions of straight guys. Thanks all the same for offering your opinion. I'm just saying I didn't go into this looking for confirmation that this is an erotic experience for all men.

That's true to an extent. I just don't see that looking automatically means "erotic".

Well, the reason I started this thread is because I don't have it all worked out. People mistake inquiry sometimes for being a manifesto. I'm not saying anything for certain. I'm checking to see what others think.

At base, what I am addressing is the unusual phenomenon known as "attraction." Whether you are sexually attracted to another person of the same gender, or see another person of the same gender that you want to be like, there is an attraction there at some level.

The weight room is full of this sort of attraction. And it is one of the few contexts -- that I know of at least -- where men can get away with openly expressing admiration for one another in a socially sanctioned (non-controversial) manner.

At some level, the common ground here is "attraction." It's interesting that it's the context and location of the attraction that matters. I sometimes think that guys who are gay or bisexual are guys who were simply excluded at an early age from being a part of these socially sanctioned contexts where male-male attraction/admiration is allowed.

This is a non issue as far weight rooms go. Everyone checks everyone out to some extent in any setting. And regardless of if I am in the gym or not, a guy staring at me overlong is going to be creepy.

I wear sweats in the free weight room and yes as a small female I'll always get checked out even when I'm brick red in the face, sweating like a hog and my hair is disheveled.

That dynamic changes some what when they see how much I can leg press.

I myself do not tend to check guys out but I notice a lot more guys than women checking me out in the gym. I think because they are there to get in shape and when they see a muscular guy they have muscle envy, the same feeling I get when I see a very well hung guy. I am a grower so I do not tend to get as many looks for that feature.

Female lifting = checked out. Doesn't matter if you're small or large. I'm 5'9" and 179 pounds and the minute I hit the floor, heads turn. If you have tits and you're amongst the beefcakes, you're gonna get gawked at. Oh, and I feel you on the leg press thing :p Then the jaws get a little slack and the eyes bug out a little like "wtf?"

Leg press = 700 pounds ( 14 50 pound plates) and doesn't include the sled, for 3 sets of 10.

Squat = 80 kgs, for 3 sets of ten in the power rack, not a machine.

I'm 5'2 and 57 kgs.

Very very impressive.
