It should be noted that CAM (original poster) is lucky that he's in NYC, which truly does have a wide array of bars with different vibes for different crowds.
Choices are unfortunately still limited if you are outside of larger cities, where the LGBT community is big enough to sustain several bars and clubs. Here in Chicago there's definitely a place for most communities (although sadly there still seems to be a lot of resistance to African-American and Latino clubgoers in some clubs).
If you're in a smaller town, you're likely to see maybe two places in town - one dance club and a dive bar that can be a weird clusterfuck of people. Been there, done that. Am very glad I live where gay men are a part of the fabric of the city, and not some oddity to be gawked at by str8 girls coming in on their bachelorette pub crawls!
