Fair enough, I agree to a point about the diversity in beliefs (although you don't allow radical Muslim clerics and we do). However it's worth noting that the population of China is 1,306,313,812 and they also have a far lower crime rate

I think the only reasonable conclusion is to blame MTV and rap music for the whole of America's social decline :bigsmile:
[post=352901]Quoted post[/post]

I always figured that was b/c they have less tolerance for crimes. I've also actually read that part of the reason for their low crime rate is they have a much lower percentage of drug use than us. Plus I think that more of their children are taught respect and values than ours.

I hate MTV. :bigsmile:

I think a very big problem is that you can't find a good cheddar cheese in Central Virginia.

I think a very big problem is Virginia. And don't harrass me, Pecker, I'm "in the area" and was stationed in Norfolk long enough to know.

Actually, it was a Family Guy reference. And my point, since you're clueless, was that TAG's 'diversity' comment was inane.

I was at Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek... just down the road from Oceana.

Maybe it's because when I heard it, it was after someone made an "I'm not racist" comment to me that day.

Either way, contrary to what the good doctor thinks, political correctness is using keywords like 'diversity' to patch up racist comments.

Sounds like "Old Europe" is feeling a little irrelevant these days.

Can we not have separation of church and state yet still respect the fact that the overwhelming majority of the people that live in this country are indeed Christian?
[post=351437]Quoted post[/post]

well, in a word: no.
[post=351441]Quoted post[/post]
That quote is loaded. It all depends on what you or I mean by the word "respect." The word recognize might be a better word. And the word "Christian" is loaded as well. Who defines what a Christian is? And the word"Overwhelming " is the third loaded term here. What constitutes "overwhelming?" The last figures I read were that about 90 per cent of Americans believe in some type of God. About 60 % of Americans are members of some organized religion and most of that number is afflicated with an organization that claims to be Christian.

There is a vast diference in the beliefs of people claiming to be Christian. So the number of Christians in America is dependent on the definitions of the person doing the counting.

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true..." Bill Clinton

Ha! It's my own opinion that the "overwhelming majority" of Americans don't attend regular church services or hold any particualrly strong religious views one way or the other, but would still check "Christian" on a survey.

That is probably true, Jana. I think they are called culturally Christian as there are culturally jewish individuals. When my brother went to Cairo to visit friends he found that the same existed there among Moslems and Christians. There are always going to be people who are culturally alligned with one religion or another but actually have no particular deep or abiding connection to that faith.

Point is, over here, if you have a fight, you have a good ol' punch up. You wake up with a black eye and a bruised ego. It's pretty hard to wake up from a bullet in the head.

speaking as someone who's been stabbed 14 times within the UK, i gotta call bullshit on that comparison. even if nobody thought to bring a knife, there are always broken bottles and chair legs in abundant supply...

people intending to inflict serious damage on each other will always find ways to do so, regardless of the exact implements they use for it. there are few rules of human behavior more consistent than that one.

That's me. I consider myself a Christian, but I'm not really a practicing one. I don't think I've been to church in over 10 years.

The point I'm trying to make is that, knives, bottles, chair legs or soggy tea bags are not made to kill, they all have proper uses. Guns do not. If you bring a chair leg to a fight you intend to wound. If you bring a gun to a fight you intend to kill.

how the fuck would you know man? do you really want me to describe every single person I've seen killed or fatally wounded by knives, chair legs, lengths of chain, fucking woodworking tools, or just good old-fashioned fists and feet?

read what I wrote again: if you decide to kill someone, you're not gonna worry about whether the means you use have been approved by the manufacturer for killing. walls and doors are not designed to be used to kill people, but i can assure you that they're no less effective for that. owning a gun just means it's over quicker.

nobody decides to go out and kill someone simply because they happen to own a gun (well okay, I'm sure there IS someone that retarded out there somewhere, but I've never met them). the vast majority of gun owners, both legal and illegal, own one so that they can defend themselves from anyone who might intend to kill or injure them. some folks do like to have a gun so they can threaten other people with it to whatever ends, but there's a very substantial difference between intending to frighten and intending to kill.
