Now, regarding your remark about the working class - I came from the working class. My parents worked hard to make sure I got the best education so that I might have a better, easier life than they did. But they also taught me the importance of helping others. What happened to the American ideal that when my neighbor does well, I do well? I don't see why it is such a horrible thing to have federal programs to make sure the poorest among us can get a helping hand so that, maybe one day, they will have their own small business. Maybe one day they will work for you! What's so terrible about that?
I'm with you in the red part (I honestly didn't mean to make this a red vs. blue issue, but these colors work better than
this for example).
Your parents worked hard to provide a better live for you and ensure you would be able to get an education. That is indeed the American way. Helping out your neighbors, that too is the American way (I could insert a link to statistics showing that conservatives donate time, money, and other resources to charitable causes more often than liberals, but let's not digress). My question is,
where did the federal government step in to make all this happen for you and your parents?
I'm all for giving people a hand-up, but it seems to me most government programs (indeed there are exceptions, albeit rare) create a dependency by the recipient on what are essentially hand-outs. Never mind the waste of resources in the bureaucracy (80 cents of each dollar spend on welfare stays within the system for example).
Even before we look at the inefficiency of the government in how it manages itself, look at the money wasted on pork spending. The stimulus package, despite assurances from Obama, was riddled with wasteful programs. They are spending a billion dollars that will do very little, if anything, for the economy and real job creation. Had they divided that billion equally among all taxpayers it would have done much more, much quicker for the economy, but we can discuss that some other time if you'd like.
My definition of stupidity is repeating the same action while expecting a different result. How long has "the war on poverty" been going on? Makes the mess in Iraq look like a walk in the park.
Education is another example, the overall mantra by the left is that "we have to spend more money on education." Yet test scores have not improved, far from it. Yet any attempt to do something different is immediately shut down. Not to digress (I do have the worst case of ADD you'll ever encounter), but one goal I hear Liberals strive for is equality for all. Why not allow all parents to choose their children's schools? At the very least, why not have an honest discussion about it? The moment school vouchers are mentioned, the teachers union gets on the phone with the Democrats and gets them to shut it down. (Don't get me started on the mess created by "No Child Left Behind").
Point is that the idea of creating programs to help people sounds nice, but the execution leave much to be desired.
The inalienable rights from the United States Declaration of Independence are
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's the pursuit that the founders thought should be guaranteed, not happiness itself. Your parents took that pursuit to heart and you should be both grateful and proud of them for it. But do you honestly think they would have been able to provide for you as they did if they waited for the government to come through?
