One of the benefits if being gay is that if I'm sharing a room with gay friends it's a given that most of us will be sleeping in the nude.

Definitely one of the benefits! When a particular gay friend of mine comes visiting for a few days, I love it that we can both be naked most of the time. Awesome doing things together in the nude without any silly reservations or sexual tension -- including sharing a bed.
