I've met 6-8 guys from the LPSG, with quite a few more who I'd like to meet someday if my travels take me to their neck of the woods. Generally we've met for lunch or dinner (as with any web-originated meeting, public = good). On one occasion dinner was followed up by "Fahrenheit 9/11" at the local cineplex. Once I met a fellow weightlifter from the site at a local gym.
In most cases I have just met people once -- either because we don't live near each other, or because we didn't hit it off as well in person as we did online. Fahrenheit 9/11 guy, for example, went all drama queen on me and said I was too attractive to be "just friends" ... despite knowing from the start that I was straight and happily married.
I did become hiking buddies with one LPSG guy. We went on about a dozen hikes together back in 2005-06 before he had to sell his car, which made it hard for us to meet up. We met again for dinner a few months ago, just to catch up. I'm sorry that I don't have him for a hiking partner anymore.
My meet-ups have all been platonic (contrary to conventional wisdom about LPSG meetings!) The hiking partner and I did eventually show each other our flaccid selves after a number of hikes together ... hardly the stuff of LPSG "Fictitious Stories" threads.
Yes, there are awkward moments at the start, but I imagine that's true of meeting the real-life version of any online alter ego. With luck, you move past that reasonably quickly and can interact more or less like ordinary people. Which is, after all, what most people here on the LPSG are.
