After having a marriage with my best friend break into pieces, I wouldn’t say that “best” friend is a requirement.
Damn good friend, yes. But I think the “I married my best friend” line is as misused as “soul mate.”
(Of which there are two definitions)
ya need a bestie to test drive your discussions with, sometimes.
But, you might test drive discussions with the bestie with the partner, so.....
I want a partner with intelligence and curiosity. I want (usually) him to challenge my world view in some way.

someone who knows I don’t need a protector (What a crock), but I do need someone who is a safe space holder. As I am for them.
