Being the sister and ex boyfriend of two guys that have committed suicide, and having once been depressed enough to be on the verge of suicide myself, all I can say is this:

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

A bit too trite for my tastes. How do you know the problem is 'temporary'? Is it so hard to believe some 'problems' are intractable? Does the idea of suicide mean one has a 'problem' that will just go away one day with the right actions?

I mentioned quite a bit about the topic of suicide in another thread a while back, but I will add that, although I'm lucky to not have had anyone close to me commit suicide, I have seen effect of suicide on those left behind. The family (especially parents) never recover; are never able to shake off that guilt and stop the "what if" reel playing in their minds.

With regard to the "temporary problem", as long as you're going to be alive the next day, the problem cannot be permanent. As long as you have time, you're able to change (whatever you feel is wrong in) your life.

Also, many see suicide as their final act of taking control, but this gets marred so easily by the "oh shame, s/he just couldn't handle it" of others. As far as I'm concerned, I don't want to pitied while I'm alive and I sure as hell don't want to be pitied for taking my own life when I'm gone.

I have seen this thread several times and want to put down my thought... though i don't think anyone will agree. First, I am hoping there is know one asking that needs real help. Like many say, it is a permanant solution to a temp problem in most cases. However, I do believe there are people in chronic pain that is beyond the understanding of others. This pain may be physical or mental. They live in agony on a level only known to them and they are in true hell. Medicine is unable to help them and they seek this to be in peace. It should be an option to them and I find others wrong in not letting them have the dignity they deserve. These people are not weak. They are often very alone and have used more strength than others can phathom to keep going. I wish them peace and comfort.

The fact is there is no treatment option or options that even approaches 100% success rate. Most statistics say the known option(s) can make 80% of people feel better and the other 20%? Well for them the 'problem' is indeed 'permanent'.

I think that we get caught up in this "It's-wrong-to-feel- ad-or-really-depressed" mentality which is so pushed on us by mainstream American culture. This only makes people who feel bad or horrible feel even worse than they already are. You don't "fix" depression (and anxiety, too); it is something that is part of your experience; it cannot get shooshed out by your simple command (no thoughts and feelings can be). You must go to all the dark places in the mind and fully experience the darkness all while learning to become a wise observer so you can see sadness and depression for what they really are: just thoughts and feelings. That is how healing begins. However, this is a long process, not a quick, one-stop fix. And, sadly, there are some people who become so enslaved to their depressive experience, whether impulsively or over period of long planning, that they end it all. That is indeed a tragedy, and we're all somewhat responsible as a society.

We need to stop judging those who admit to being depressed. Some of them live awful lives, and never can you know what it's like if you've never been in their shoes. Just be loving and compassionate, and help them acknowledge their feelings.

It is imperative to get toxic people out of your life. That has already been mentioned by earlogjam.

I see it as an extremely selfish, self-centered permanent solution to a problem that is always temporary. The coward's way out. It WILL only bring more pain and suffering.

There's always many good ways to fix a bad situation that seems hopeless and never-ending. Suicide is THE bad way to fix anything. The start of getting well and fixing it is to continuously and actively search for any and all GOOD ways to fix the problem.

The best solutions are out there. And if they're not coming to you, then ya gotta go track them down like a long lost relative searching for a huge inheritance!

Suicide....I've had a few around me; hanging, wrist slitting, driving off a 500 foot ravine, drug overdose, gunshot to the head, exhaust fumes....they felt it was the only thing they could do to make all their pain go away. I miss them but it was their choice. I've already seen the dark side and suicide is not for me.

death with dignity.
don't tell me how to live/end my life, i'll extend the same courtesy to you.

is not my place to dictate bearable. temporary. when all the struggle is still the good fight. and when it becomes cruelty/masochism. my place to offer whatever support/compassion i can. in any way a loved one needs me to.

is not always going to be what i want. a choice i feel good about. a decision i would make for me. tough poop. love ain't easy.

all this talk of selfish. anyone think it's maybe a touch selfish to ask someone in crushing pain to suffer more, to save you the grief of losing them?

I can't stand it. it pisses me off when I hear about suicide. how selfish and stupid can you be?

~you think you're the only one with problems?

~while you're there contemplating suicide, someone else is fighting for life.

and on my final note, if you're dumb enough to commit suicide, you seize to be owner of your body and it should be harvested for organ donation and the rest should go to scientific study.

same applies to inmates in death row or those with death sentences.

The only time it really makes any sense to me is for the terminally ill (I think they are calling it pain management). As far as my personal feelings go... I have been able to find my way through everything life has thrown at me so far; but I am deeply saddened by people who have had some sort of demon take hold of them and they can't find their way to another resolution to the issues that led them to such an outcome and hope that some can find the help or guidance to find some light at the end of the tunnel instead of darkness.

Some people who commit suicide are very mentally disturbed (schizophrenia, bipolar, etc) and have no control over their actions. And bless the souls of those who've chosen to take their own lives at their own hands, no matter the reason. Do you ever wonder if narcissism every plays a role in those who are just terribly depressed? I am no right to judge, but I know that life isn't all about the individual who is suffering. My life is not all about my wants, my desires....I am a part of a family, community, a world....and a universe. Am I really an entity all unto myself? Do I really have this right? These are the big questions we need to come to terms with.

My big dick narcissism is just for the bedroom. LOL. I am no better than anyone else. I am just a person like you. Life isn't all about me. I want to learn to be less selfish.

All these thoughts seem rational and logical, but a person that spends 1/2 their day wishing they didn't have to live another minute, is only thinking of themselves. I am wondering why being selfish is a bad thing.
