I always wear trunks. I've never worn a speedo or whatever the other names for that style are. I'm a pretty avid swimmer and while I can't do very long distances I can swim pretty fast. I know speedos are supposed to reduce drag and make it easier to go faster and swim longer, but I see a couple of problems with that.

First, if its true then I must be a better swimmer than I assume as I'm faster and swim longer than a majority of the guys at my pool who wear speedos.

Secondly, making a workout easier reduces the benefit of working out. For example, if I can bench press 150 lbs 15 times, for example, then I could make it easier by reducing the weight. With reduced weight I can do more reps and do them faster. But I haven't really given myself any benefit. Either my workout is easier because of the change, or it takes me longer to do as much as I was doing at a higher weight. I think the same is true for any kind of exercise, if you make it easier then you are just making it more difficult to get results.

Anyways, I prefer shorts/trunks. I prefer being a bit more modest and I don't think there is any negative impact on my swimming.

Some trunks are better than others. I had a great pair that I could actually swim in, but they wore out (man, nothing destroys clothing like swimming pool water). Thing is that style rather expensive, and speedos/jammers are really cheap.

That might be true, I haven't really compared the cost. I don't think I've spent more than $25 on a pair of trunks and they last long enough for me that it's worth it, but that's not a judgement on anyone's choice.

I haven't had a problem with them wearing out on me, though, the gym I've been going to for the past year has a salt water pool, so they don't use so many chemicals in the water like chlorine. I wonder if that might have an effect on the wear and tear. For what its worth, if you have the opportunity to use a salt water pool I recommend it. The water feels nicer on the skin, my eyes and sinuses don't burn, and my skin actually feels smoother after swimming.

Over many years I've worn trunks, speedos when I had a better body, and currently wear jammers. No doubt you're getting more of a workout with increased drag from wearing trunks. From a feel perspective, I like wearing something form fitting because there's no fabric floating around my thighs. Less distraction, so to speak. I find it more enjoyable that way, personally.
