I lived in NYC during the Giuliani Administration and was visiting this past September when DeBlasio got elected.

I was under the impression he promised a complete break with Giuliani/Bloomberg police practices and the unconditional end of stop and frisk.

Today he brought back Giuliani's police commissioner, and according to the article below, said "stop and frisk has to be used with respect."

Now, most journalists suck at their jobs, and quite possibly vital context is missing from that article. If not, this strikes me as the biggest and most blatant betrayal by an elected official I've ever heard of. Overbearing NY police were the reason he got elected.

Can anyone explain what's going on?

Bratton named NYPD commissioner - Investigations

Since Commissioner Kelly is on his way out, de Blasio looks like he has a bit of cover. We'll see how this bears out. Unless Bratton makes clear and coherent strides to modifying the policy and showing his commitment to put a stop to the minority groups' harassment on the streets, this won't bode well.

shoot the messenger!

Well, they do. And I still can't believe that quote wasn't taken out of context, because if DeBlasio really said that he was going to let NYPD continue stop-and-frisk, only make them be kindler and gentler about it, then his whole campaign was a gigantic lie.

The writer also didn't even mention the rift between Bratton and Giuliani that led to Bratton's departure from NYPD -- a pretty huge detail.

He SHOULD allow it to continue. It may not be warm and cuddly, but it most certainly works.

Absolutely right that MOST (certainly not all) journalists suck.

That's debatable, but ... even after promising to end it in his campaign, which concluded only a month ago?

The effectiveness is not. Whether he should or shouldn't might be, but only on moral grounds.

Whether it's what he's actually doing, I cannot say.

Agree, but this was a big issue during the campaign, and is not popular with his constituents. Remains to be seen what happens with the crime rate. There were 7 murders the the first couple of days of the new year. NYC is getting like Chicago.

I really hope that the crime rate doesn't rise in NYC after plummeting for so many years. 2013 broke an all-time low homicide rate of just above 300 murders, which hasn't been seen since the 1950s. I was also watching the news today, and DeBlasio was criticized for the ineptitude of the plows to plow certain parts of NYC after yesterday's snowstorm. The Upper East Side was hardly plowed at all, yet his neighborhood in Brooklyn was plowed down to the blacktop. He's all about income equality, yet I find it ironic that the affluent section of the Upper East Side was neglected. Accident or deliberate?

I noticed that as well. The media hinted at it without coming out and saying it. Vedddy interesting.
