But of course. The militantly unreflective do need their scapegoats.

Now, after putting the old logical processes into gear, let's see .... Christianity might come into it if there was some common behavioral factor visible in the predominantly and prominently Christian countries .... Italy, Spain, Ireland, Philippines, Portugal, Poland .... what else, Ukraine? And just about everything south of the Rio Grande. Including Brazil.

In that list, the US isn't even in the running. Hmmm, maybe it's not about Christianity at all.

I think big dirigible the reference here is to that particularly narrow-minded batch of fundamental Christians who are seen in their most neinous form at sites like www.godhatesfags.com .

Of course I know many fine Episcopalians and Unitarian Universalists who don't subscribe to that ridiculousness the zealots do. But as in all religious sects (since man appears to need to have them) the zealots - with whom with find ourselves quite over-run just now - have ruined it for the rest.

I think that, if I may speak for the others, is what they mean by "Christians".

From an American's point of view, all of these things might help explain it:

I think we Americans are told, since they were children, that nudity and any form of sexuality is wrong. Hence all the gay hating and censorship.

People are afraid of being offended and decide that what they don't like seeing, other people shouldn't see too.

It most likely is a religious thing with most families. It's sad how self-conscious most of us americans are, when even non-progressive countries are okay with nudity. Just shows how stalled we really are.

Undoubtedly. Everyone thinks that Christians in this country are repressed and backwards, but have you any idea what kind of penalties they have in muslim countries for sexual crimes (which include adultery, fornication, and homosexuality?) It ain't pretty folks!

Fornication gets you 100 lashings. Adultery is punishable by death by stoning. Homosexuality gets you death by burning, stoning, or being thrown from tall buildings.

So, those who think the Christians in this country are too controlling or too repressive need to have their heads examined!

You have a point----but it doesn't mean that the fundies (those hypocritical, uber right wing war mongering, everything for me, nothing for you because _I_ am God's chosen bigoted asshole "christians" who have gained too much power in this country of late) aren't hypocrital, bigoted, and repressive--it just means that there are groups who are worse...

Why do Muslims love suicide? Why in Brazil do poeple gang fight in the street and live behind gates? Why do the French complain so much? We shouldn't question things like this but just accept it as part of the local culture. Someone who ask why is America this or that way would also more than likely be against globalization, right, but if you want America to become like Europe then isn't that globalization. Just because its your culture that's being moved around the world its still globalization. Enjoy our differences. I also think it is because while Europe changed, especially after the war, the Americas did not. We don't want to be like Europe. The Americas is where Europeans came to get it right. They ruined their homeland and got a new start here.

Yes indeed we didn't. We became even more arrogant. Europe (thankfully) continues to evolve.

We don't want to be like Europe.
Who's 'we'? Speak for yourself.

America is where Europeans came to get it right.

It's where some Euorpeans came for a variety of reasons. Do you contend that those Europeans who did not migrate to American shores somehow "got it wrong"?

They ruined their homeland and got a new start here.

I suspect you've never been to Europe. 'ruined their homeland'?? Have you been to the Cotswolds or the South of France or Tuscany for the love of Christ?? It's the most intact countryside you'll find.

Thie above-referenced post is the very thing that consitutes the "Ugly American". And we wonder why Europeans think we're "yahoos" and "cowboys"

I for one would be very interested to know where in Europe you have visited and what made you come to the conclusions you have?

P.S. Your name, kyuhaku: do you mean kyuuhyaku (900) or is it some kind of sword?

It seems as though i should check my japanese before i go ahead and use it. I guess im a bit rusty. I meant 'Kyohaku', or 'star', but it seems as though not speaking the language for over a year kinda has put me at a disadvantage!
