What is Key West, FL like?

This isn't an observation on the gay life there. But we were struck by the absence of tropical, beach-like opportunities. It's more built-up, and the atmosphere is centered around clubs, bars, and restaurants, more than on beaches. But driving a few miles back on the keys, you'll find beaches.

We love going back to Palm Springs (no beaches, but pool culture abounds), but we've never discussed going back to Key West.

Exactly. You're not going to Key West for a beach scene. Stay on the mainland for that. Duval St. is "The Strip." That's where the action is at night. It's becoming very commercialized. We went a few years ago, and I really wanted to go experience the sunset at Mallory Square. Even that's become an overproduced celebration. The best part of Key West was taking the ferry to the Dry Tortugas.

But then again, I'm not a gay male, so I didn't partake of that offering. Your mileage may differ.

Boyfriend and I will be going to Key West soon. We are not staying at one of the gay resorts, but was wondering what it's like? Might go to one of the pool parties at Island House. Do guys wear speedos on the beach there?
It's not really a beach town. It's not a place centered around a beach in the way that most costal Florida cities are. You don't need to wait for a pool party at Island House. It's always a pool and sex party. Just get a day pass and check it out.

I liked Key West. Rent a bike and explore it. Climb the lighthouse and see the six-toed cats. It's by no means a super gay place anymore overall, but that's fine.

I second the bicycle. Forget scooters. Traffic is tight and parking is non-existent, even for a scooter. Stick with the bike.

It doesn't take long to bike the entire island.

I have been there three times in my life. Once by ship, the other two times by flying in a tiny plane that resulted in less than fun turbulence. OK, the town itself can be fun but really nothing special. The days of it being a 'gay destination' are over (IMO).

I will say there was lots of eye candy there when I would go back in the 1990s. It has been a while so not sure what the vibe is there now. Many families go there from what I understand. If you google real estate, you will see that a mobile home on a small lot will cost you north of $1,000,000.00.

If it's on your bucket list, go and see it. I do not have plans to ever go back.

Where do I start? Since most of you are flying into Key West (KEYW) I should warn you that the tiny airport terminal is hopelessly inadequate to serve the massive influx of arriving and departing passengers. There are plans to enlarge the terminal in the very near future, but most airline analysts say it will be obsolete the day it opens. Key West International Airport New Concourse A & Terminal Improvements

And now for the good part. If you are adventurous and desire some slightly voyeuristic and/or exhibitionistic fun, do visit the Garden of Eden at 224 Duval Street. This clothing-optional Key West bar, located on the third floor of a three-bar establishment, has been a mainstay for years. Cruise ship couples visit the Garden of Eden when their vessel is in port, if-only for something to tell their friends back home in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio during the middle of winter. The place can be lively as New Orleans at Mardi Gras or dead as the Catacombs of ancient Rome, all depending on the time of day and a flip of the coin. My wife and I have seen it dominated by straight couples being body painted, while on another occasion it was overflowing with local gays celebrating someone's birthday. https://www.bullkeywest.com/garden-of-eden

You have to visit Island House. It is a magical place. I once stayed there and never left for 3 days...they have everything you could ever need...24h food...24h pool...24h gym...24h fun! I highly recommend visiting if not staying there. Have a great time!

I have not been in years but the years I did go was like stepping into a pot of gold... it was the mid 80's and fun fun fun... the clubs, the streets, the restaurants, the amount of gays... we stayed at Divines house... yes that Divine. it was mayhem and magic... those that worked Provincetown in the spring summer.... then went to Key West to work the fall winter... and several restaurants of the same were in both.. then things changed and the magic was gone...

Sounds a bit like Palm Springs today, but looser and younger.

Today Key West is not particularly gay except in pockets.

Used to have swinger friends that went to Fantasy Fest there, they enjoyed. I cant stand crowds so I'd never go but they had a good time

For we straights Fantasy Fest isn't nearly as much fun as for gays. Most of the swingers we know at Caliente resort in Land O' Lakes go to private parties in Key West for their good times.

Still, if I were you stud, I'd go over to TPA airport and hop aboard a Silver Airways ATR turboprop for a flight down to EYW.
